However, it also means the screen will scratch more easily, and will degrade faster than the current glass screens on smartphones

I think if they remove the touch screen they can make the screen more durable because people will touch it less and cause less scratchs and stuff

Excalibur, 16 May 2019Mate X still betterIve been using phones for years now without any screen protector, and so far, the screen is still scratch free. I have high hopes for the mate x. Liked the design and specs.

Americans need to get in with the program already, media consumption is preferred on large screen phones. Asians don't even have larger hands on average yet they are fine with it. ;)

Anonymous, 16 May 2019You went from writing off the whole category to pointing to... moreGiant phones are selling just fine in Asia and most other parts of the world. It's just the USA that's fixated with smaller one hand held phones. American market is not worth focusing on for volume sales and predictable revenue. Foldable phones are a tablets and tablets are dying, no one wants them apart from apple zealots. Large phones are already covering the needs without flimsy points of failure trying to "fold" it. This fad is DOA as it is it will go the way of the dodo very soon, this is just to milk the category of buyers who don't have much insight into technology but have money to be part with. You know that saying about a fool and money to be parted? Yeah pretty apt here ;)

I'll tell you the future of smartphone tech and it isn't the folding phone, it's all screen with all sensors under the display. THIS is the true innovation in waiting.

Prit, 16 May 2019Common Samsung this is not a solution !!! Plastic screen pr... morePlease enlighten us with your solution for that... Because how would you protect flexible screen? With sapphire glass? xD
This is not just some normal plastic, its obviously hardened version, not scratch resistant because there are no flexible material for screen that can be resistant but it should keep screen protected from smaller scratches.

There is "live" coating that heal it self when scratched but its not good for screens that need to be perfectly transparent and without distortions.

Its seriously weird that people complain so much about brand new technology that was not really tested in real life. Both Galaxy Fold and Mate X are really are one of kind and they are not made for mass market.
Both companies release them as they are because sending them to people is one of best test of device that no QA or internal test can match. Of course its hard to swallow price tag, but its not device for everyone.

You play games on steam in beta stage for years all the time and you dont complain so much even if most of those games have nothing new in them but still you pay full price for them... but someone give you totally new thing that was not seen before and.... you complain and demand things that are not possible to make in just 2-3 months... If you want mass produced flexible phone that is resistant to... less inteligent people that cant hold phone without hurting them self and device, you will need to wait another 2-3 years....

Excalibur, 16 May 2019Mate X still betterRemains to be seen. They must have been rushing the hell out of it if they decided to delay it 2 quarters. I expect users will have to carefully tuck it in a soft lined pouch all the time or the screen will look horrific in a matter of weeks.

Giant phones are ergonomically terrible. A hand-friendly phone that opens into a more useful tablet-sized screen is a fantastic idea. The technology will get there in time.
