Let me eiiiiiiiiin, 22 May 2019??? Apple's SoC design based from ARM and PowerVR, not ... moreYes but samsung has also their on cpu architecture known as mongoose cores or M,like the M4 in the latest exynos 9820, which is better than cortex A76.
Also, there have been rumors that samsung are working on their own GPUs, will be known as S gpus.

dist, 22 May 2019Steve Bannon says killing Huawei more important than trade ... moreOh i believe him, we just should ask ourselves why. The "spying" nonsense is just this, nonsense. They can't spy on the US when Huawei equipment or phones can't be bought there and we all know the US doesn't just "punish" anyone for being "bad".

AnonD-558092, 22 May 2019Any hopes Huawei would survive with their own OS just vanis... moreWhat I'm worried about now is the speed in which we will now progress technologically with less competition now

And china exports alot of rare earth metals that all electronics depend on what consequences lie with the world globally if they retaliate in such a way?

US economy will be in danger if they don't take action against China because they are doing business with other foreign countries using Chinese dollars and not US dollar so US is angry at China. This is business. US wants to continued to dominate the world with its military and technology power.

[deleted post]It definitely gives bad press for non-Western countries which will be very careful in dealing with such situations. They might indirectly help Huawei to accomplish their objective of homegrown Architecture Hardware, OS, GPU, competing eco-system. Yes it may take years but remember we are in no hurry as the last 5-7 years innovation in the PC and mobility space has been very slow....Chinese people of course would double down their efforts like they did with bullet trains and various challenging infrastructure projects...

Let me eiiiiiiiiin, 22 May 2019??? Apple's SoC design based from ARM and PowerVR, not ... moreOups now I realized.
Not only they can't use newer core designs like cortex A75, cortex A76 etc.
They can't use the ARM architecture at all.
              That's what's happening ?

In that case RIP mobile devices from Huawei .

r33fd, 22 May 2019Can't they just make their own design like Apple ? Why r... moreYou are confused. Apple, too, is based on the ARM instruction set.

This just goes to show that US is actually a "risky" business partner. Other OEM's should seriously consider enacting contingency plans should something like this happen to them.

Anonymous, 22 May 2019Wow, Arm is an English company owned by a Japanese company.... moreThat's what I thought initially before this was even announced, Huawei can still make SoC's and use Android... they just need to make sure its from their design and their software services.

Now, after thinking of it, it's appropriate for ARM to close their gates to Huawei. Why?
ARM has several divisions, there's the Norway one which leads in their GPU design, the UK one which leads in their small.Core design, the USA division which leads in the big.Core design, and finally the France one which develops iterative designs/optimisations based on the USA/other divisions.

It's very convoluted, and not possible for ARM to license something to Huawei without being able to guarantee that the USA division didn't help with the design in any way. Because of this, it's more appropriate for them to quitely back-out to stay from getting into trouble themselves.

Overall, though this means Huawei is screwed. If they cannot buy a SoC (because none exists that is outside of USA), can't design one themselves, and possible competitors (RISC?) are not fleshed out and likely decade(s) away from being viable. Not to mention the challenges this creates for software. I mean, even MediaTek cannot sell chips to Hauwei under this ban because MTK are using Stock ARM-licensed designs.

....Huawei may be selling their devices in China (and neighbouring countries) for 2020.

Qualcomm design based from ARM and ATI(Adreno)

Samsung`s, Huawei 's and mediatek also based from ARM and MALI

Apple is the highest priced product, with greatly blown out prices. Their product is good, but competing products are as good or better, from all aspects.
Apple is organic?! No my friend, Apple is the leech that uses incredible marketing to persuade the masses to have your mindset. Apple is the company that pays and "supports" review sites and media outlets to promote their products. They are the essence of corruption.

Other Chinese companies, take note. He's coming for you too.

[deleted post]Yes, while both are "communist"/authoritarian countries, China is only a problem for its own citizens and closest countries. It doesn't try to rule the world and it doesn't have the means to.

US, on the other hand...Facebook/Google/Apple/Twitter/Intel/AMD, ARM (To some extent). And not to mention their army which has presence in almost every "democratic" country.
