05 June 2019
The claim is Cupertino’s behavior is anticompetitive and is “profit-killing” for iOS developers.

It's ok that Apple sets standards for what can be published in its store, otherwise the place would be filled with crap.

Monopoly is what ... moreMan 500 grams for tablets and mackbooks cost even more than 999 but there is more plastic than metal 150 or up to 250 grams in case of phones or even less due to a glass sandwich but still a lot of plastic inside.

Kangal, 05 Jun 2019Well, the developers aren't wrong. Apple has a gross monop... moreDevelopers aren't being abused by the App Store just as they aren't with any digital store. Developers don't have to deal with anything. Apple deals with bandwidth, reviews, payment processing, international exchange rates, advertising, and creating the platform that these developers use.

I don't want the AppStore to become anywhere close to Google's PlayStore--which has so much apps but are practically junk. There are even apps that haven't been updated for years and are no longer compatible with most OS versions. So those 2 app developers can just put their apps in the Google PlayStore. I'm glad that Apple doesn't allow side loading of apps or anything to that effect--makes the whole OS safer for users.

Apple doesn't have a monopoly on Apps. There are all kinds of apps for all kinds of different platforms. They just control iOS apps, which happens to be their own product.

The key here is to differentiate between an "App" and an "iOS app". If the courts rule that iOS apps are their own commodity, Apple has a big problem. Developers creating apps for a proprietary operating system should know what they're getting into. And I believe many do know, they just want to get more money for their work.

People just want to get money from Apple.

The app store is perfect! No junk unlike the google play store. I wish the google play store was a bit more like the app store. I'm tired of all the junk, incompatible apps, apps that no-one from google checked or approved, duplicate apps, no control at all.

How is it a monopoly when they have other platforms to use?
And why do they want to upload their apps for free when apple is checking them? It's their store. Don't regular shops get a profit from everything they sell?
On android it's free because Google collects data.
On iphone it's not cos apple doesn't allow ads or data collection.

The real problem is Apple's deliberately vague policy on what can be banned.

Develop an app that's too popular and useful? Apple bans it for "reasons" and the next iphone update includes a new, built-in functionality that looks a whole lot like the app that was banned a week ago...

Hmm, 05 Jun 2019To be fair the apps sound like junk to me...Absolutely. This is just a PR stunt.
What? If they weren't on apple's store would anyone ever know about some random useless baby naming app? They should pay a 90% cut if you ask me.

                                      Well, the developers aren't wrong.
Apple has a gross monopoly over iWatches, iPods, iPhones, iPads, i Pros and iTV's, much much harsher than MS did with Windows in the 90's (where they were sued/penalised billions of dollars). However, the yearly $99 price is totally not important.

On the other hand, it's thanks to this tight control of the iPhone's firmware, the AppStore, and inability to side-load Apps which makes iOS a formidable security challenge.

First of all, the percentage cut is important and should be up to debate. In some scenarios, 30% can actually be super-cheap/bargain, and in other scenarios it could be super-expensive/rip-off. So developers should be able to negotiate with Apple to have this percentage changed anywhere from 1%-34%.

Regardless, it should be fine for Apple allowed to function as they have been, provided that Apple themselves don't become unfair, biased, or force unreasonable demands to developers. Nor should Apple be allowed be break their own rules, in fact, they should be held to higher scrutiny. Unfortunately, this is what is happening. Apple is exerting their control, abusing their power, and breaking their own rules... all the while making very high profit from the App's percentage revenue.

                                      So the solution should be:
                                      A) Either Apple stops, and fixes all their issues to make things fair
                                      B) Apple allows Apps to be side-loaded, or alternative AppStores
                                      C) All developers cease their operation, basically going on strike, and somehow the consumers decide to support humanity, leading to a huge shift in marketshare which results into a "bankruptcy" scenario for Apple
                                      D) Nothing happens. Apple keeps getting richer. Developers keep getting abused. The overall user experience drops for the consumer. Some judges/politicians get extra bonuses. The concept of fairness becomes a fairytale.

Welcome to Apple's world dear Developers. Monopoly is what Apple do best, beside selling 500Grams of metal for 999EUR.
