They've been working on this OS for over a decade but are just lunching it now out of necessity from an existential threat, therefore I suspect the OS sucks terribly, nevertheless, I'm hoping I'm wrong so that Google can get some real competition.

This is business and Huawei is free to release their own operating system to market. People who don't understand business are strongly against Huawei but me I understand business and I support Huawei.
Like it or not Huawei has better phone hardware and their phones are fairly priced than Apple, samung and Google who are only money hungry companies these days.

I do hope Huawei continue and this ban is resolved , plus more competition is never a bad thing , maybe the market needs a shake up....but I'll stick to tried and tested and most importantly trusted devices and software.
Maybe when ark os matures .....although it sounds too much like the cheap argos brand archos.

They need to give out 5 million testers not 1 million, and spread them in different regions. Too much trial and error, bug fixing, even Android and iOS face such issues and been around years finding and refining bugs and performance. If Huawei intend to catch up fast, that's the only way.

Similarly, Huawei cannot survive globally expect in China without Google Services. I think Huawei has developed an Android Fork without Google Services for the international markets..
