why doesn't Sony hire some low budget indie filmmakers or some film students to make a movie competition on this phone. That would have been a brilliant marketing strategy. if the movie's good, they can release it under sony pictures. Such an obvious low risk strategy and the company ain't doing nothing about it. Just tells you there is something wrong with this company.

Imagine the Steven Soderbergh's movie "UNSANE" shot entirely on iphone 7+, had it been shot in this phone, it would be a whole another story for the cinema industry. This phone would've revolutionized Indie Films industry. Heck, the movie "TANGERINE" was shot entirely on iphone 5s and is rated 96% on Rotten Tomatoes not to mention that amazing quality.

looking at some of the other "cinematic" video footages of other phones on youtube:
LG40's looks so low quality, Huawei p30's video are cropped or zoomed for that 21:9 aspect ratio. but this phone, except for the dynamic range and the native 4k stabilization, this is a great phone to capture semi-professional cinematic videos/ and the fact that it has a 4k screen is amazing. Had the cine alta and the alpha camera guys worked even more harder , this phone's cameras and features would top iphone's and samsung's cameras in no time.

Agree about no built in editing apps that syncing with the Cinema Pro app. That means if you cut some videos from its wide angle, telephoto, 960fps and added later on, the filter will not be syncronize between each other. Might as well just record all video without those filter, then put altogether after been edited. FilmoraGo is the best free apps for video editing, and even comes with many more filters. The best paid app of course goes to FilmicPro.
Cons aside, those cinematic video sample is nice. So soothing when watching it.

Sony has bad user interface across the products. Every one who shifted to Sony in video or still profession knows how clumsy Sony can get year by year

Anonymous, 23 Jun 20191) Samsung started to be a big copycat after S4. Just like... more1) Still not a good enough reasoning for why Samsung would want to copy Sony's CineAlta app, currently they don't have any reason to have a semi-professional video recording app on their phones.
2) Except HLG format clearly isn't working as it is intended to be, which means colors look extremely desaturated and contrast is way too low when you don't have a compatible display. No smartphones or laptop displays support this format, only recent Sony flagships and some Sony-made professional displays. Good luck sharing the HDR video footage with other people's devices or uploading it to Facebook.
3) CPU? You mean ISP? Either way I don't blame Apple for being more logical and not opting for a niche format with very limited compatibility. Even if they implement HDR recording capability on iPhone in future, I expect it to have the feature as one of options, with SDR Smart HDR set as a default in the camera settings.

Nick Tagataka, 23 Jun 2019A) Why would ever Samsung be interested?
B) I don't think ... more1) Samsung started to be a big copycat after S4. Just like Xiaomi is. They copied stacked sensor just for 960 fps HD, ignoring all goodies this kind of sensor can provide.
2) HLG is much more flexible than HDR10/10+/Dolby Vision .... Read definition
3) The "HDR" of Iphone is just frames stacking , same thing applied to photos. Just for better exposure. There is no 10-bit recording .... Blame Apple for not offering or the cpu that may not be strong enough.

I think it's a great start at something new, unique, and not done before in the ridiculously oversaturated smartphone market. It didn't have to be straight up perfect on the first try, and it's only going to get better with the newer flagships.

B) I don't think Apple likes to put features that has no cross-platform compatibility, which is in this case, a proprietary HDR video formats that Sony and Samsung use. So no, it's very likely that Apple will stick to SDR "HDR" for more practicability.
The answer is neither.

It's clearly stated that "the contrast and colors are tweaked to taste in post-production". It's also clearly stated that the "default rendering is too flat". Most of the advanced users do color grading, and they prefer flat sources. What's there not to understand?
