Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge aren't receiving quarterly security updates anymore

22 June 2019
The company still plans to issue "regular" patches, but that means the cadence will be slower.

Kangal, 22 Jun 2019I don't get why people are hating on the Samsung S7-Exynos.... moreThe Snapdragon series of the Note 4's and S7's etc are equally long-surviving as their Exynos counterparts so I don't understand why you're specifically naming Exynos when Snapdragons with plenty of mods and roms are out there too lol.

Oh and by the way, the V20 is a Snapdragon only device however it did not receive such affectionate love and support with mods and roms (actually it was really hard to do anything on LG phones in the first place) as Samsung phones hail from so that's why the V20 custom Android community is essentially a non-existent ghost-town.

This is coming from both a V20, double Note4, Note7 and currently Note9 user.

Anonymous, 22 Jun 2019To increase sales of the new devices. Smart move. " To increase sales of the new devices. Smart move. "

Looks like you're not getting the bigger picture and lack empathy for others...so let me ask you: smart for whom?

Planned obsolescence is not a smart move unless you're the one reeling gains off the loss of the ones not in the know.

Anonymous, 22 Jun 2019It's samsung the one that gives only 2 os updates and not googleAs long as you keep defending Google's deflection of responsibility the reprehensible corporation will never change.
Google's own update policy for the devices they sell themselves is (and this you already know): 3 years for security updates and 18 months for Android updates. Identical to what you get on a Samsung device.
Compare this to any Linux distribution on PC and you'll see a gap around 5-10 years. This despite Google is making billions of dollars off Android.
Google either needs to be sued to the extent it REALLY hurts their wallet or Android needs to be forked out of their greedy hands.

Arpan, 22 Jun 2019is it official update??? or you just rooted with pie 9.0???The ROM is originally for Note FE, but because the hardware is the same as S7/S7 EDGE, some of GOOD developer make it for S7.
Just go and look at on XDA forum, just search for the S7. Good luck, for me its perfect, love the night mode, OneUI, and the battery life is good.

Wasn't 1st of April when it was announced that the S7/S7 Edge will now get quarterly security updates?
In less than 3 months they changed their mind?
Anyway before they stop completely with the updates they must at least give us 9.0 Pie with the latest security update of that time as a R.I.P present for the phone!

To get at least 5 years long updates you have to purchase an iPhone...i bought iPhone 5s in 2013 and still get software/security update...

Nick, 22 Jun 2019S7 is old af. If you have one go recycle it. In all honestl... moreNope, it's doing it's job just fine!
My S7(Exynos) is perfect for me, I originally waited for the S8 but when I saw that there isn't a flat 16:9 screen with normal corners, I went straight to the normal S7(I also prefer that size). I got a defective unit a first full of problems but they replaced it to me with a brand new that had Android 7.0 out of the box.
To be honest I wanted the 64GB Dual Sim version(or at least the 64GB) but only the 32GB Single Sim were left.
Also if they had released the Active model worldwide, I would have gotten that!

My next phone might be the upcoming S11e, I liked the fact that S10e had a small flat screen(even though it isn't 16:9, it has rounded corners and no physical buttons) was OK with me but the punch hole camera, even though it is better than a notch, I still prefer it with no such thing. Lets hope Samsung uses an IGZO-tft Amoled panel for the new phones so it can implement more easily the under the screen camera.
The side mounted fingerprint sensor is convenient for some but I prefer it at the front, also soft shell cases will cover the entire phone. So a next gen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor would be awesome!!
In addition, having a bigger battery(4000mAh+), a 7nm+ EUV cutting edge SoC, LPDDR5 RAM(min 8GB), UFS 3.0/3.1 storage(min 256GB), latest version of gorilla glass, WiFi AX/AY, Bluetooth 5.1, IGZO-tft Amoled screen at 120Hz(with 120Hz touch sensor) with 1440P or even 4K res, 5G by default, better cameras, faster "fast charging" with a GaN charger, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and many more!!

Kangal, 22 Jun 2019I don't get why people are hating on the Samsung S7-Exynos.... moreAlso you can legit flash the official NoteFE ROM and enjoy OneUI/Pie and quarterly updates.

I don't get why people are hating on the Samsung S7-Exynos.

                            It's one of the longer surviving* phones, I mean;
                            - heaps of accessories, with first-party and third-party support
                            - plenty of Custom Roms, Mods, and root methods
                            - it has good IP67 water resistance, better than all Upper-Midrange devices
                            - the Exynos 8890 is roughly equal to the QSD 712
                            - the camera is only now being challenged by Upper-Midrange devices
                            - the display is still better than all Upper-Midrange devices (except maybe the Nubia RedMagic 3)

I guess the closest 2019 alternative to the 2016 Samsung S7 would be the Chinese/Lenovo Moto Z4. Not too dis-similar in size, display, camera, battery life, charging, speakers, etc etc.

...all-in-all if you can get the S7-Exynos at the same price as current Midrange/Upper-Midrange devices (and you can), potentially you're getting a better overall phone for your money. The only downsides are weak mono loudspeaker (earpiece assisted) and the previous generation microUSB port. If you're willing to overlook the consequences of the curved display design choice (slippery, more fragile, smudge magnet, distortion on display, extra glare from sunlight on sides).

*potentially the LG V20 is a longer surviving device, followed by the Samsung Note4-Exynos, and after that the ZTE Axon7 and the Sony XZ1 compact. Then probably the 2013 devices like the Samsung Note 3/Sony Z3c/LG G2/HTC M8/Nexus 5 (for the linux ports). Although there's still a few out there rocking the Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy SII legacy devices.

the only good thing about samsung's pie is the dark mode. i prefer to use flat s7 rather than my s9 with the stupid curved screen

This is just another reason to never waste money on buying an expensive "flagship" when they become just as obsolete as cheaper phones within 2-3 years, long before the end of the lifespan of the phones! Many banking apps require that the Android system is updated, and that force the users to buy a new phone every 2-3 years, this is unacceptable!
Laptop manufacturers do not have separate versions of Windows 10, they all get Windows 10 updates for as long as Microsoft provide free updates to their Windows 10, and this is how it should be done in the Android world!
