This must be a great technology to avoid punch hole/waterdrop/notch on the screen (sorry for those... Notch lover) and still can have waterproof design, but anything is still early to say, they must have some technical problem have to solve out and the image quality not yet come out. I have another idea a better way than this technique, but I know someone can do it.

its too early to celebrate anything. I got nothing against Oppo but even if they managed to develop the first under screen camera, we must wait to see if the quality of the camera is any good first. no one will take an under display camera over a regular one if the UDC takes bad pictures.

TheGoldenMellifluous, 26 Jun 2019Yup. Sony patented the under-screen selfie/front-facing cam... morethe patent was for the camera to be used to detect gestures, not to take pictures.

TheGoldenMellifluous, 26 Jun 2019Yup. Sony patented the under-screen selfie/front-facing cam... moreWho cares about sony patented or not since there is not even a prototype? This is like a motor company patenting a flying car that can go 500km/h which never happens. The truth is oppo beat sony in the race for underdisplay selfie camera. Well done oppo!

indlvarn, 26 Jun 2019No, it's not better, it makes phone more heavy, thick and r... moreBut the image quality is excellent. They've been given excellent marks for selfie camera performance.
Also, please don't forget that Asus has basically given you a bare bones handset, not too costly, not too researched. Otherwise, there's not much reason to make it thicker.

TheGoldenMellifluous, 26 Jun 2019Yup. Sony patented the under-screen selfie/front-facing cam... moreWell, Huawei has had 1000+ subcontracts with different Japanese tech firms for supplying different electronic components, so I am not even surprise to see a second Japanese company other than Sony to supply under display camera to Oppo.

Its fantastic that oems like Oppo are releasing their new tech so early and forcing the bigger oems to speed up their own development; but the fanboys on here claiming everyone else is inferior to Oppo just because they didnt release it first are hilarious. No one cares who came with the first camera on a phone, first touchscreen etc. The only thing that matters in the real world is who has the best components at the best price at the moment. The image quality of the gen 1 and 2 UDC will be garbage compared to visible sensors without a doubt. And almost none of those praising Oppo will even get the phone that this will come in
