Here I don't have much of a choice.
LG is slower than a snail for updates.
      Motorola stopped flagships.
      Sony abandoned our market.
Can't import phones because they won't work with IMS. And warranty concerns too.
Hate EMUI and locked bootloaders and lack of Jack and the lack of expandable storage (NM cards are virtually nowhere to be found in stores).
      Nokia not selling here.
Hate stock Android (too basic and unthemable without root thus no warranty) and the Pixels' weird design choices (mismatched corners... seriously?! Plus a notch airport on the XL).
      BlackBerry is again too stock.
Apple... no way I'm paying for these lower resolution screens with huge notches and no stereo speakers. I'd have to pay the equivalent of 1400 USD for enough non-expandable storage for my CURRENT needs.

Sometimes my updates got delayed but so far on my Note9 I'm getting monthly updates, Night Mode and QR code are coming later this month, Call and Message Continuity is coming in a month or two... They are backporting features from the S10 and that's pretty cool. Don't have much to complain about. Except live chat customer service. But otherwise nothing to complain about.

I hope at least one other company takes note and make changes to their devices and policies to make them an appealing choice.

I precise that I value the warranty but I also want to unlock the full potential of the device once it runs out because anyways I'll have to pay for repairs.

After ZTE, Samsung, Sony, LG, my latest Huawei is the one I like most.

I always pick Apple on gaming and stuff, but the only reason why Apple is on top of this topic is because iOS is only for Apple, and people who likes Android wants to try what Android has in other brands, so this topic is somewhat useless

I've used Nokia, Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG, Apple and Motorola, not Huawei though. Nokia, Sony and Motorola have been my favourites so far.

The reason why Apple is in the lead overall is because it's phones run on a different platform entirely, so most people who are used to it are unwilling to switch to Android.

As for why Huawei & Samsung are in the lead of Androids, it's because those two offer the most complete set of features & the least amount of compromises.

I’m sticking with Apple for the moment. The only smartphone brand who offers you at least 4 years of updates, smartphones with great chipsets and a stable OS.

I liked Samaung phones since the first Galaxy S2 that i got, since they usually do creative stuff in their software and hardware, but since OneUI and the S10 with the punchole came out, im kinda considering switching in the future years, currently with a Note9 but i got it 5 months ago, i don't need to upgrade for now...

Long time Samsung user, I got tired of the battery problems and the never ending price increase without added benefits. I decided to switch to Huawei but without breaking the bank either and I never regreted it. I'm very happy with EMUI (they have the best remote control app I've ever used) and the battery performance, I've even gotten used to the lack of 3.5mm headphone jack. I think I'll stick with Huawei, unless I find a really good offer from another company, I'm not going back to Samsung in the near future.

                        Buying LG since 2014.
                        Lg G4, G5, V30
Being into mobile software development and using lot of brands I've found LGs are best.

I'm currently happy with my Sony Xperia XA2. But I need something more powerful and with a better camera. Also, a compact factor is important to me. I will probably switch in fall or winter for S10e, Mi9SE or something new from Sony. Depends on my budget.

I only got my LG V20 on a whim since, at the time, the HTC I wanted wasn't available. In the nearly 3 years since I've had it, while I miss having front-facing stereo speakers from my dead HTC One M8 H/K edition, I now appreciate the IR Blaster (used it more times than I thought I needed to), MIL-STD-G rating (I will never understand why, to this day, more phones don't try for that rating), and removable battery. My phone is at 30% this morning but I can top it in 20 seconds with one of my 2 spare batteries instead of waiting for QuickCharge. So useful.

I do my research and that's why I'm going to wait to see if HTC's coming at us with a flagship or Razer will surprise us with an all-out 3rd phone because nothing this year so far is making me switch (Galaxy S10+ is really close but I wish for a bigger battery considering removable isn't an option). I live in the U.S. so a number of brands made for India is not an option (Xiaomi, Honor, ZTE, etc). Red Magic 3 was close and I might suck this up but software is virtually receiving 0 updates for the Global ROM and the Umidigi F1 would've been good but P90's the better processor.

Well, this is not a surprise since iOS has only one brand while Android users have many options.

Whackcar, 14 Jul 2019It is ok to have preferences, but if your favorite brand lo... moreExactly.
There's nothing wrong with having expectations, but we need to judge the phone based on its merits and not its logo. I was thinking about this the other day, and realised I tend to orbit certain brands closer than others because they've been consistent in offering me features, developer friendly, and other attributes that I value.

The best phone, at lease from my power-user and bargain-hunter perspective has been:
                                2009 - $490 - 09/09/09 - Motorola Dext
                                2010 - $660 - 25/03/10 - HTC Nexus One
                                2011 - $570 - 07/09/11 - Samsung SII-Exynos
                                2012 - $550 - 23/11/12 - Samsung NOTE 2-Exynos
                                2013 - $670 - 22/10/13 - Samsung NOTE 3 (Snapdragon)
                                2014 - $720 - 30/11/14 - Samsung NOTE 4-Exynos
                                2015 - $680 - 07/06/15 - Samsung S6 Plus-Exynos
                                2016 - $650 - 05/09/16 - Samsung S7 Edge-Exynos
                                2017 - $620 - 11/06/17 - LG V30+
                                2018 - $680 - 18/06/18 - Razer Phone 2
                                2019 - $699 - 31/12/19 - ???? OnePlus 7 Pro / ASUS RoG Phone 2
                                2020 - $699 - 01/09/20 - ????

The above list is only for Android, I have been quite more involved with the original Windows Mobile PDA Phones, and even had early iPhone's where they were true innovators/market disruptors.

Although I like my Notes (previously a Nokia loyal, the only company that was worth being loyal to), I am not happy with Samsung delayed updates and delayed innovations. Although no excuse for delayed updates, delayed innovations prove sometime to be right. Its very unfortunate that No Flagship is really trying hard to take over at least the Notes.

Anonymous, 14 Jul 2019I do research before i buy new phone but end up with Xiaomi... moreThat's my Boi. B|

I've been with Sony Ericsson/Sony for 8 years, and I'm happy, enjoying, and stick with it (like the unique-design, vanilla UI with essentials), and Xperia XZ is my current daily driver. Though with new regulations on my country, getting much stricter every year on smartphones, I'm sure sometimes, I need to move to another brand, and I'm currently deciding between Xiaomi or Huawei as my new daily-driver, and all of my working Sony phones as my secondary and multimedia-consuming device (except C4 Dual and planning to get XZ Premium as final send-off).
