Flashback: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - the little touchscreen that couldn't

14 July 2019
The phone was commercially successful and reasonably well-liked by fans, but it was a herald of the end of Nokia as a smartphone maker.

Quad speakers, not stereo... The first of its kind, and still better than most of the ones today.

    The phone...the myth...the legend!

Symbian was a capable OS that was very lite weight and powerful.
People that have used the OS in all its form factors will understand.
Maeomo was a fantastic OS, derived from debian it was truely a powerful mobile computer with phone functionality, it could do a lot and im yet to see a handset be on par.
Meamos successor was to be meego and that was a big OS capable of supporting IOT and was showcased. They where to release a handset with the same OS... The N9.
Meego was way ahead of its time.

The big issue was yes apple took the world by storm with the iphone and nokia were desperate to get back up but they chose the wrong platform...... Honestly the OS was good, very easy to use, UI was detailed and capable. People need to remember that all OS's at their infancy had not a lot of basic features like copy and paste and so forth.
The main problem was either MS or nokia not releasing high end devices and only going for low to mid tier only to saturate the market, this statergy is good but you have to commit and when they did release a decent handset it was welcome with arms wide open.
The problem with all new OS's no matter how big or small will always be battling against markets that are dominated by apple and android..... And that is the MS demise.

Remenber that with MS slowly killing off nokia MS got a lot its patents in the end for a number of years but i guess this could be a new begining for nokia and HMD. As they use android now nokia is slowly starting to gain some grounds, i wish they adopt sailfish OS and make those unique handsets like the N900 amd n9.

Back then phones are trying their best to force as much features in it to sell to customers, now they're removing it and sold separately as adaptors and stuff.

        Just like video game DLC.

The retail package was rich with accessories.... I even got a stand for device in the package... Also the audio from the stereo speakers was amazing...

Nokia's downfall isn't solely based on Symbian, it's the price. They release phones with mid-range chips and priced it as premium. I remember whenever I would buy a new phone, I would compare specs and there are always android phones with better specs than Nokia and cheaper. They were doing well when there wasn't any serious competition. When Samsung, HTC, and Sony Ericsson up their game, it took away Nokia's market share. Even as they were going down, they kept pricing their phones as if it's premium and kept using mid-range chips.

Today's rebranded HMD Nokia isn't as good as the old actual Nokia brand , they aren't bad but nothing outstanding.
I've tried a few android Nokia from 7 plus , 7.1, 3.1 , 1 and the brand nostalgia soon wears off

AnonD-819322, 14 Jul 2019Was a great phone for its time. I miss the days where, what... moreHow does relying on apps reduce the usability of an OS ? Every computer program is an application so why is it sad ? Would you prefer a chisel and a stone tablet ?

Was a great phone for its time. I miss the days where, whatever OS you had, functionality wasn't really lost. Windows Phone lost to Android and iOS only because of app support. We depend on apps way too much these days, which is why there is a lack of usable operating systems, it's sad :( This is why phones have become boring for me, there's a lack of excitement now for me...

I remember when I bought it sometime late 08' early-mid 09' knowing they were rare and went to buy a case for it and the guy at the phone booth in the Norridge, IL mall asked if that's the 5800 xpressmusic? I was like yep and could see he was very fascinated and keen on examining it but I didn't let him nor did I fancy any cases as there was barely any so I just left and never had a case. Had it for a very short while basically only enjoying the touch screen experience as it was my 1st touch phone and the Carl Zeiss 3.2Mp cam. It recorded good videos during day but usually images and videos were grainy so that was my biggest dislike so I sold it because I didn't like the thickness and the lag it had. Sold it for the same price I bought it for keeping the 8gb microsd card that came bundled with it. It was such a high capacity memory card back in the day and my only file storage card for many years thinking I would never be able to fill it up until I somehow lost it...
Now I'm rocking a 256gb card and it's half way full...:)
