Pixel 3, S10+, Xs Max, Xperia 1 all have 12MP dual pixel 1/2.55". But not same sensor. There are many different sensors with same specs.

The 13MP 1/3.06" , 12MP 1/2.3" and 12MP 1/2.55" have many variants. Newer versions come out yearly.

AnonD-558092, 17 Jul 2019The variable aperture was very significant.Significant for whom?

This coming from a Note9 user which defines this current variable aperture as unfinished, still belonging in its R&D prototype phase before being hyped up and rushed out..

The S7,S8,S9 and S10 DO have the same 12MP resolution - so it is essentially the same sensor as that "12" is the most important number.
          The S7,S8 DO use the same sensors as they're both 12 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm.
The S9 & S10 also use a 12MP resolution with the difference only being the aperture which is f/1.5-2.4 with the 3rd addition being the 16MP Ultrawide sensor.

Is your wife different than other women but all of them have the same specs?

And no, Samsung does not give the S & Note a new sensor every year...but every 4-5 years just as the commenter you replied to actually said as that is the actual fact.

Look at where the Note4 camera specs and then the Note8 and then at the Note9...

Once Samsung move... moreDon’t make me laugh Samsung only introduced the 16:9 aspect ratio and unfortunately LG did it before Samsung with G6 and 12MP camera comes first with iPhone 7/7 plus, S6 and S6 edge comes with 16MP then Samsung copied the same idea of iPhone 7 12MP with S7 then Google did the same with there pixel phones. Now Samsung doing the same as Chinese OEM’s so nothing new.

If your business is photography or even your serious hobby then a smartphone just isn't going to cut it, if we are being truly honest....at pixel peeping level smartphones don't get anywhere near a full frame sensor or even an apsc or micro 4/3

I know pixel site size isn't the only important factor but it's a good place to start, and yes I understand the idea of computational photography but a good sized not overly packed sensor is a good foundation, as well as how many stops of dynamic range the sensor can capture.

when it comes to general pics I guess any camera is a good camera, but when it comes to pin point fine detail at full size then nothing beats an out and out DSLR, either consumer or pro level, I would love it if more camera companies collaborated with phone companies, I mean sony should be well ahead of the game given their pedigree in the mirrorless DSLR range and even their pro compacts.

A 1 inch sensor should be the bare minimum in smart phones that profess to be for the photographer in us.

Next years S11 & Note11 cameras will have true innovation since the old recycled S7 series cams have been in the recycling mill for the past 3 years now being passed onto the S8, S9 and even the S10..

4 years of waiting for significant camera upgrades seems to be the norm now and the minimum holding off time for a new device purchase.

Stacked CMOS is not only for 960fps, but it can provide many other features.
                              But they dont do it.
Copying the sensor just for super slowmo was a dumb move.

Ssung should take it's time with the S11. Once Samsung moves away from headphones, everyone else will. And once it moves away from the 12MP 1.4micron sensor, the majority of the big flagships (Pixel, iPhone, HTC etc), will move away from it too.

Hopefully Samsung creates a new era for smartphone Photography. Much much faster sensors, even faster glass, and next generation of low light and zoom capabilities. 16MP and 25MP from a Quad Bayer sensor seem like the right way to go.

Then we consider that at least 95% of the smartphones have unusable photos beyond ISO400 (except Huawei, OnePlus, Google, Sony and HTC , the rest becomes useless).

Older iphones used to have 8MP 1.5 micron. HTC had experience with more than 2micron. All failed.

With newer sensors and newer tech , this has been overcome. Phones with 1.12 micron can beat another that uses 1.4 micron if right settings are being used.
Tons of things matter like sensor size, readout speed, type,of sensor, aperture, iso, shutter speed and focal length.

Pixel 1 had 1/2.3" f2.0 + 1.55 micron. Traded by 1/2.55" + 1.4 micron with addition of OIS and f1.8. HTC did the same route.

Even with same specs, newer sensors can do better. The performance gain is not 100% software only.
