CompactPhones5ever, 07 Aug 20192025: "Xiaomi announces new 420MP sensor, unprecended detai... moreGlad I'm not alone in thinking this. The U.S. FCC need to step in. We saw similar phenomenon with Wattages for power amplifiers in the 1970s and 80s (and still today in far east markets) claims like 20,000watt ghetto blasters and such. This beast needs to be put down and ensured it doesn't happen again.

Anonymous, 07 Aug 2019Why not 128MP? It sounds better and logical. It's not RAM, nor storage. Camera sensors and MP count does not follow that path.

Check with Samsung directly, 27MP by Tetracell technology (their name for quad bayer).

Most people don't want to take photos that take up more than a few Mb in size each. Takes up too much storage space.

Lossless zooming, on the other hand, is highly welcomed.

I bet Google Pixel's 12 MP sensor captures more detail anyway.

So 27 mpx shots using pixel binning.
                    Sweet!!!

Anonymous, 07 Aug 2019With better High ISO performance, you dont need to use shut... moreiFixit showed that the three cameras of the P20 Pro have hardware stabilization. For some reason Huawei announced that it had no OIS and used EIS but the hardware stabilization is there ... We would have to ask them why they hid it.

The OIS always help as is active all the time and is clearly an improve when you compare images despite the shutter speed.

"The Samsung-made camera uses a huge 1/1.7-inch sensor with 1.6μm-sized pixels (when combined from 4 into 1), improved color reproduction, as well as Hybrid 3D HDR that promises higher dynamic range compared to current sensors."
                                Promises, always promises

Ridiculous discussion around hire... It will remain to be quad bajer and it will remain to keep normal format proportions so 108 MP translates to 27 MP usable @ 16:9 96 MP - 24 MP the rest will be used for EIS.

Xiaomi, 07 Aug 2019Basically u don't know that 108 can be divided by 4 right?Basically he suggest 3x3 binning rather than 2x2 which is currently implemented on 48MP sensors.

With 2x2 binning you can get much more detail at still images, but you will waste a lot of pixels at video recording.

In that case pixel size is 0.8 micron, sensor will be huge, and unless it will bring the table whole another level of tech, it will require a huge thickness. Probably not less than 15mm. To keep the thickness in check they have reduce sensor size, therefore they need even smaller pixels than 0.8 micron.

108MP with 0.7 micron pixels still will be significantly larger than 64MP sensor, yet I think it still will be too thick for modern smartphone design, so pixels might be even smaller like 0.65 microns.

I think that's why the other guy thought smaller pixels are likely. If that's the case I agree with him.

Larger sensor or smaller paired with monochrome can easily outperform at iso800 + shutter 1/16s another phone using iso250 + shutter 1/2s.
Iphones do very poor at night despite often using shutter 1/2s or 1/4s. Very poor texture.
OIS is not needed if faster than 1/8s. And slower tahn 1s needs tripod.

P20 Pro does not have OIS and wipes the floor with Note9 and XS Max.
