Sony Xperia 1 gets disappointing DxOMark score for both front and back cameras

28 August 2019
The rear camera scored on par with the Poco F1, the selfie camera edged out the Pixel 2.

Shui8, 30 Aug 2019Its their protocol. Their review, their ways. Even i do not... moreThe way of protocol used is to fawn some phone makers as they are adopt and launch the (less people use) Tele camera and (more artificial) Bokeh into the market. You remind me your Huawei Mate 20's AI camera lost the realistic (too much software processing) in the Bokeh rating but still get high score that was insane and unbelievable!

If one to review a camera, they must squeeze the maximum potential it can do, including Manual Mod & Cinema Pro app. They have points on details review, but seems lazy to complete it as a whole. Xperia 1 deserve better.

About the Background Defocus part on older Xperia, i'm not suggested it. Its horrible, looks the most fake between others. Computational photography on Portrait Mod is improving nowadays, from adjustable aperture using Dual Cam to 3D ToF sensor, smoother gradient effects. Sure it still fake, but its improving. Plus if we talk about using natural bokeh, bigger sensor, faster aperture still beats Xperia 1 small sensor. Rumors suggest next Xperia will use bigger sensor, hopefully it does.

Bokeh bring background Defocus only, why so selectively added in the rating?
Panorama photo is having for years in practice , but why not include in the rating?

Is the Bokeh indispensable? Miniature camera, Lomo and black & white photography is rarely used? Compare to artificial Bokeh I will pick the actual Bokeh done by the aperture, I don't want the aggressive blur crop out the object, natural look is better. If you want those overstate "software effects" why don't include all the other effects like Lomo toy-camera black & white..

Is the Tele camera Indispensable? Most of the people use the Ultra wide camera but doesn't include in the rating. Panorama also takes wider images than ultra wide camera.

LG started the Wide angle, but after Mate 20 Pro implement it, now most of it has it, become mainstream nowadays, including Sony. Pretty sure they will update again with the new scoring system next year, Main + Zoom + Bokeh + Wide Angle.

Brazen Beef, 30 Aug 2019Texture is only 68? Rrriiiiiggghht. It should be the highest score on that regards, better than others. They praise about Xperia 1 texture on detail review, but then gave lower score.

          Double standard DxO.

Anonymous, 29 Aug 2019You can say what you want but it still highlights the facts... moreYou're still not gettin' it kid. You're still speaking like that number carries meaning. I used to think so too. Just watch a camera comparison video or a review of it from someone else and arrive at your own conclusion based on that - not this hearsay. Matt Moniz on YT has some good ones.

Sony's mobile division definitely has it's weaknesses, but so does every other company. Google sucks at hardware. Samsung sucks at software. Apple's a walled garden. Between notches and dropping headphones jacks.. all of these companies have questionable management in my opinion. Never mind this hole punch nonsense.

I've yet to lay eyes on a phone that checks all the boxes for me. The Axon 7 did actually for a time. Every camera has it's weaknesses. iPhones are well rounded just not mind blowing. Samsung sucks at skin tones and is high on the saturation. Huawei photos look good but always a little off bc of oversharpening. I've always felt that Sony does color science and skin tones best.

I know that you and the others mindless reaction to this headline is that Sony's behind the curve. A part of me had the same initial response until my brain kicked in. To be honest, every time a hot new phone comes out, I check it out and wind up thinking: Oh cool. But why did they have to mess it up by doing X?

I do like the direction Sony is headed. Aside from the no headphone jack thing. I've never owned a Sony phone, but I've always appreciated the flavor and originality they bring to the table. I'm glad they're smart enough not to board the notch train. They've always had an eye for clean design.

Then again, the greed of the all major players will probably be their undoing as well.

Also, review the whole GSM Arena video where they compare the cameras of the XZP, S8, and G6. It's dated now but provides a very good insight into the general characteristics of their image processing.

Their new phones using bizarre design and too long aspect ratio with gigantic bezels. That's funny people here talk about sony enemies and blah blah blah....

This is B.S ..DXOmark gives ratings for who ever pays them or something.. this is unacceptable !
Obviously Sony does not pay them(they don't spend alot of money on phone division anymore) because of their sales.

I have both Xperia 1 daily driver and Huawei for trips outside the country..Xperia 1 is better than my P30 pro by almost everything picture quality colors (realistic) focus..just the P30 wins by far in the zoom department.
Seeing dxO with that rating for Xperia one is unfair !
I never trust such rating like the water resistant ratings it's all for money you pay more u get better score ..if you want to see real comparison watch videos of real people with brain know how to use each phone and take pictures..(Sony Xperia 1 manual mode for example).

Technicly Sony Sensors are really good. Its just down by the lens setup. Now if they were to use Leica lens and Pixel A.I processing we would be beating P30 pro S10 5G hands. I used to have a XZ1 again camera was awesome.

This is a nice excuses, but why Dxomark only promote the new rating score for Bokeh and Zoom? Because the phone maker adopt and launch multiple cameras into market, they want them be looking great and better than "old phones", such marketing can't you see?

According the Gsmarena's multi cameras pool which camera are mostly used by user, the result show people use Ultra wide camera more than the Tele camera. The Tele camera (Zoom) is seldom used just like Miniature camera, not so many people cares and the Bokeh too, because Miniature Photography (Toys camera) also do the blur on selected part of the depth to create Bokeh effect to making the subjects look way smaller than in real life with an almost toy-like. Remember that either Bokeh for Portraits or Bokeh for Miniature are not create the exactly same as real scene from what you have seen and it's done by software.

Someone may love Panoramic photography why don't add scoring proportions for the images patching quality? Why pick Bokeh and Zoom for the rating selectively but not for the rest? Furthermore, Sony's Background Defocus app also having for years and get improvements, why don't promote the new rating during that time!? Conclusion it is a marketing hype to promote multi cameras.

I thought DXO was reliable but from this place it is evident that their scores are biased. I have seen Sony smartphones perform too good. The phone under discussion here, is absolutely great in low light photography and daylight details are also max.
