Anonymous, 30 Aug 2019Mind adding size of that humongous camera bump in the thickness?Mind that the actual sensor itself is much smaller than the one inside Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Anonymous, 30 Aug 2019Before OEM can give any android update, they need the kerne... moreAs OEM must have Kernel sources, can you proove they hadn't? No!

On Note 4, Xiaomi has at least Android 6.0's sources...they're absent on their Github. Is it Mediatek fault?
All Nokia's released with Mediatek soc on Oreo will receive their 2nd major update.
All Android One released in 2014 with mt6582, start on Android 4.4 and receive two major updates to Android 6.0. Google stopped because of incompatible GPU with Vulkan. They stop Nexus 5 updates for the same reason.
I think Android One with mt6735 received two as well, for exemple BQ Aquaris 4.5 from 5.1 to 7.0 (sources are on GitHub)
All Sony's devices with Mediatek receive 1 major update (as it was mid-range...18monthes updates, sources are available even if they're horrible to find on their website)
Each Time a serious company want to do updates on Mediatek, it can.
    I give you many exemples!

Nevertheless, I can understand the way you see Mediatek.
    Problem comes from :
    - many Mediatek's cutomers were tiny brands from Schenzen
    - devices aren't available officially in Europe.
    - these brands often doesn't make their rom themselves
    - their third part freelance developpers, ask money to update and don't give back sources to OEM.
    - european customers import these devices.
For some other brands like Xiaomi, it's a little different. Redmi Note 2, 3 and 4 are made for chinese customers. No Google in China, Android version? Chinese don't care as they have the last fonctions on the latest MiUI...and Redmi 4 from mid 2016 received MiUI 10. Most customers are chinese and are happy...the other will blame Mediatek, why Xiaomi will play employees to update Android version?

    But now, past is past...
Xiaomi officially sells devices in Europe, Xiaomi does now what european customers want to.
Xiaomi does it on Redmi 6/6A

Plus Play Protect Certification gives you at least 2 years of update.
And you can find sources for all the devices released in Europe I know.

If you continue importation, you can still have updates problem.
If you get a device available in Europe, you won't during 2 years...
If you want to have custom rom, you must have an important community.

The more Mediatek's devices will be available in Europe, the more Mediatek's sources you will find.
The more a device with a Mediatek's soc will sell, the more you have chance to have custom rom on it.

Plus Kernel sources is a minor problem compare to anticompetitive behavior of Qualcomm.
Maybe you like NVIDIA graphic cards?
You know why NVIDIA doen't make soc for smartphones anymore?
European Union said it's Qualcomm's fault!
You know why LG never released their Nuclun soc?
District of California said it's Qualcomm's fault!
Where are Texas Instruments, Broadcom, Intel, ST-Microelectronics...?

Custom ROMs were very popular back when the UI/skins had very limited features and OS updates pisspoor. When there was real need for OC and UC, and RAM capacity paltry. You are just a flash junkie, nothing more.

Nowadays, real need for custom ROMs only arises after the official update support ends.

When this phone come to market??

Anders, 29 Aug 2019Both spoilt by their SOCs. Note 8 should've been SD712 and ... moreYou could go make your phone and include all those things you need. Go give that a try. Until you run a company as big as Mi or have at least an MBA, you are in no position to make a really valid argument on their choice of components. There are lots of phone brands and models, go make a choice and live with it.

Nokia 5.1 plus that launched with Android Oreo has mediatek P60; it received update to Pie before many phones with SD845, and Nokia has confirmed it'd receive Android 10 next year. So get your facts right or keep quiet about the MTK = no update BS.

Anonymous, 30 Aug 2019Updates is OEM job! Think a little. Mediatek updates soc.... moreBefore OEM can give any android update, they need the kernel source code that must be released and received from the chipset manufacturer. Then only after that the OEM can proceed to make the update.

But the problem is Mediatek dont want release them! For most of their chipset, only one major android update or maybe two at most (and it's very rare) and that's all. In RN4 MTK case, NONE! NOT EVEN ONCE! That's why Mediatek is a crap.

So it's obviously not Xiaomi's fault. Xiaomi even gave their software update for RN4 MTK until now. If they can give their latest software updates, for sure they can give android updates too. But only if they have the source code which they didn't ;)

And that chuwi hi9 pro that you talk about, the tablet came out last year and already android 8 out of the box. There are differences between be updated and already has out of the box. I want to see if the tablet can be updated to android 9. I will wait.

Or maybe i must wait forever? Who knows?

You can find devices with Helio X20 with Android 8 like Chuwi Hi9 Pro.
