Four Xiaomi phones will use Samsung's 108 MP camera in the near future

02 September 2019
So far only the Mi Mix 4 was rumored to employ the mammoth sensor, but the Chinese company is really going all in.

As proud 808 owner I can confirm, no phone has better sensor until today. Give it HDR and it will SMASH every cameraphone.

Sensors, processors and cooling hw are ready, affordable screens will come later but you will surely enjoy better sharpness on 4K screens, or stills from those videos. The same as it was with FHD vs 4K difference is big. Just compare 8mp and 32mp(or similar done with ultraclarity mode). 108mp outputting 27mp in hdr is close to that 32mp, because of quad bayer its better binned 27mp than not binned 40/48mp. I'm sure sensors wont stay all at 108mp, there may be even some 192mp monsters, and that is in short term. Who know what comes year after that.

yogivansh, 03 Sep 2019because there is no purview team that was behind this tech,... moreOld Nokia phones use oversampling and image downscaling, while those newer sensors utilise pixel binning which is a completely different technology. Quad bayer pixel binning combines light information from 4 pixels with the same color filter that are grouped together in order to produce lower res but less noisy image with wider dynamic range and better color fidelity, hence this 108MP sensor is actually 27MP in terms of effective resolution.
808 uses a FSI sensor which means it's not as sensitive to lights as the sheer sensor size suggests, and it uses regular bayer matrix hence its low light performance will be nowhere near as good as this new Samsung sensor. Don't also forget that it's not a stacked sensor so the readout speed can be a problematic and simply might not be fast enough for all the computational multi-frame image processing. Sure, it has a lot of megapixels, but apart from that the sensor itself wasn't really that spectacular. The reason why 808 was such a capable camera was mostly because of the good oversampling processing and the dedicated ISP that allowed the camera to process full 40MP image in an instant, further helped by the fact that there wasn't any practical zoom solution for a smartphone camera at that time.

Samsung is being a fool. Why sell top cams to their competitor and use crap cams in their own devices? To give their rivals an edge over them??

Still, I wonder what will use others, 48mp?, that's gonna be so last year tech.

Ultra clarity from honor is example why use full resolution. Those who know price of full size cameras with such hi res sensor will understand. Even if inferior in quality, resolution is there, what you need more is just do stacking to denoise - improve quality to almost mirorless performance.
Manual mode may not work on moving objects, but if you stack few tens of raws, final picture is sure to be awesome.
BTW I did try view20 with moving objects, it was not bad, maybe it's enough iif objects do not move fast.
I guess processor performance will matter a lot.
