Automated testing shows that the Samsung Galaxy Fold fails earlier than expected

04 October 2019
Samsung claims that Galaxy Fold can survive 200,000 folds and estimates that's 5 years of use. A robot put that claim to the test twice.

Anonymous, 05 Oct 2019Nobody will fold like this in constant speed.Lol...it's called a flawed test and the galaxy fold failed.

People is being unfair with Samsung and with this phone. This thing is fragile and you should be well aware of it when you buy it. If you got $2000 and you don't get to spend such amount very often, don't buy the Fold, get something else. This phone is for people that wont suffer a heart attack the moment they feel their nail might have scratched the foldable screen.

that is unfair testing since in real life your not using your in 160,000 folds in just 4 hours - they should consider what will be the percentage of damage if you fold your phone X times in just four hours.

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2019Lol such a expensive phone and will last only 5 years? My ... moreYour Nokia would have also been a much simpler device with far fewer capabilities using older, lower quality screen/battery/camera technology. Modern 'phones' are portable computers that happens to also make phone calls. As a result, they have more potential points of failure. Especially if not cared for/responsibly used.

Some people may not need or want these extra features. However, overall, there's just not enough of a market demand anymore for simpler, more rugged devices for the major manufacturers to have any incentive to spend resources on them. I'm not saying there's _no_ demand, but there isn't enough to justify a whole line of products.

this will be used as another reason for Microsoft to marketing their new products :p

Real life is not fast like this. Cycling fatigue is worse when opening-closing is faster. Material doesn't have time to recover. Stupid test.

Media seem desperate to make this fail, they dont have to, it will fail on its own based on its design and cost.

It is kind of a faulty test not reflecting real world usage. If you fold non stop any device it will deteriorate much quicker because of the non stop folding including added heat and other related physics parameters for constant folding. So if it survived 120k folds in 4h meaning it should easely survive 200k fold within those 5 years or more

That rate of opening and closing probably generates a ton of heat that would be realized in actual use. Sucks that it failed though. 2 screens like the new surfaces are the way to go it seems.

I'm not a fan of this device but this test is bulls!
Constant opening and closing will raise temperature and that will speed up ware and tare of components.
In a real life you'll never open/ close 100.000 in a row and if tou do, then I'm sorry that you have notging to do in life ;)

                                    Peace

Remember the ending scene in Rocky, when Stallone gets out half dead, barely able to speak?
That's what the fold looked like at the end ;)

The device is stupid, really. But this test actually proves it's more durable than expected. The bot practically slapped the device. I expected half the pixels to be dead by 100k mark!
