Smartphone sales will continue to plummet until something new and interesting comes along; and no Andy Rapin, your new Essential gimmick isn't the answer.

Apple only have the minimum hardware features and the single extra with a big ugly notch.

IMO, it's not worth buying a new phone until 2021 because all brands don't add any good feature, that includes apple, samsung, huawei and all other ones

Unfortunately the phone was tougher than the case - the thing cracked and a chunk of the corner flew off the first time I dropped it. Now I use a glass screen protector, but don't bother with a case most of the time.

I might be okay with 'the norm' being these huge behemoths if it hadn't also made reasonable sized devices so scarce (particularly at the top end).

Chris, 10 Oct 2019I am not sure about best display and battery mate. The Note... moreiPhone Xs - best display -> Galaxy S10 - best display -> ?OnePlus 7 Pro? - best display -> Galaxy Note 10 - best display -> iPhone 11 Pro - best display. This spec is regularly traded off as successive generations of panels offer improvements, and successive handsets better tune them.

As for battery, the Note10+ is almost 16cm^3 bigger, and squeezes in an ~43% larger battery (by mAh); it would have to be atrociously inefficient to run down quicker.

That's why nav bars are at the bottom and not the top. Not the case for iPhones, it's harder to use one-handed because of the overrated home screen layout.

                Like displaymate wrote

” The display has Diamond Sub-Pixels (see below) and Sub-Pixel Rendering with 458 pixels per inch (ppi), providing significantly higher image sharpness than can be resolved with normal 20/20 Vision at the typical viewing distances of 12 inches or more for Smartphones, so the display appears perfectly sharp. As a result, for Smartphones it is absolutely pointless to further increase the display resolution and pixels per inch (ppi) up to 4K (3940x2160 pixels) for a silly marketing wild goose chase into the stratosphere, with no visual benefit for humans!”

I'm now going to pick phones with a black or dark color on the back. Say I get an iPhone XS, I will get it in space gray over silver. I didn't realize certain slim TPU cases actually improves the overall design of the phone when it's put on.

There is a really nice Spigen case I got for my Pixel 3 and TUDIA for my Essential Phone. They actually hide their flaws and make the back look more interesting. They also are dust-resistant which prevents them from attracting lint. That's why folks can complain about the ugly iPhone 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max backs but most cover it up with a case anyway. There is some really nice cases I've seen for the X / XS models.

So for people yapping online about how ugly the design is whether the iPhone 11 Pro or Pixel 4, in the words of Adam Sandler... shuddup! Nobody cares what other people's phones are and they don't care about glass backs when they put nice cases for them anyway. For me, it no longer is the hack design but getting a phone with the right size especially in height and if they have nice cases for them.

Advantages iPhones will always have over Android are aftermarket service centers and the abundance of accessories...

so, are we already in 'post-smartphone' era? in the same vain that all smartphone, moronic enthusiasts claimed about (saturated) PC market?

smartphones just got powerful enough so there is no need to change them every 1-2 years... heck, if no for battery I'd probably stick with my current oneplus3 for 2-3 more years...

Of course US sales have slumped. There's like NO variety in flagships anymore. Most of the carriers shove Apple, Samsung, Pixel, and LG down our throats while Moto, Samsung, Blu, and LG handle the garbage 'budget' options. Sony is too expensive and isn't obtainable through carriers, ASUS only works on a more limited GSM scope, Red Magic 3 is too buggy but at least works with all but Verizon, and OnePlus has removed too much hardware for people to care about it.

We barely have anything. Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Meizu phones don't work here so we're SUPER limited. Galaxy S10+ is the only all-rounder that exists and that's why THOSE sales did well and people here gobble Apple like it's the 2nd-coming of Christ without thinking about how much they're paying for how little hardware they're getting.

Since HTC is holding out, I'm banking (and hoping) Razer's got one final score on a third phone with 5G before getting anything. It's a shame because the US is a major market still. I just want a phone with a gorgeous and functional display, giant battery, expandable memory, headphone jack, front-facing stereo speakers, and global bands for optimal connectivity for cheaper than the iPhone 11; is that so much to ask for?

It's crazy to think the Plus models sell the most when Apple was actually late for that size. If you skim through MacRumor Forums from 2010-2013, they used to mock Androids with larger displays. Now it's become the norm.

I'm sorta in the middle with the size. I want it to be no bigger than the iPhone X / XS / 11 Pro. Even the XR and 11 are too tall for me. I'm content with my black Pixel 3 and halo gray Essential Phone. They're the two shortest with pretty much a clean Android Pie software experience.

The shortest are actually the Xperia Z1 and Z2 Compacts but they lack the gesture UI that the Pixel and Essential have. They have Pie but lack that pill button. If I do ever get another iPhone, it would likely be the 11 Pro or SE 2. I want the size of the SE 2 / 8 but with the gesture swipes.

I've loved gestures since the Palm Pre. Apple fans still think Apple invented when the Google Guy, Matias Duarte, helped revolutionize it with Palm. Now Apple fans call Google the copycats. How ironic when all they did was steal from Palm, HTC, or Sony about their new ideas.
