Again. WP = Windows Phone. WinMo = Windows Mobile. Two totally different OSes. Right? Ok.
Now, WP8 is a rebuilt WP7. Not a different one. Get it? The same OS, but a new, better version!
This means that (simplified version for dummies): they take WP7.X, strip it from the Windows Embedded basement, write a new basement, put te WP7.X back on the new basement, and TA DAAAAM! WP8! Of course, in real life, a lot of code will be re-written.
Applications ARE COMPATIBLE because THEY ARE NOT NATIVE APPS!!!!!!!! All of them.

I still have a HP iPAQ 614c with Windows Mobile 6.1, but i rarely use it. All programs installed are from other sources (not from Marketplace) so I'm not affected by this.

windows mobile 6.5 was the best invention of M.soft but don't know why they refused to update that... no interfaceof win mob 7, 7.5, android ever can compete with this, the dual boot mode was the best ever...

First. Seeing on how MW still outsell WP up to now, it's really disgusting to see how MS were trying to kill WP by closing the marketplace. I really pity those person who buy MW in 2011-2012.
Second. You might want to search GSMArena a bit about that WP7/7.5 apps IS NOT COMPATIBLE with WP8. it is conform by Steve Balmer and Joe Belfiore. They said the developer would be easy to make WP7/7.5 to run on WP8.
And again... if WP7/7.5 outsell WP8 even after 1 year or 2 year of WP8 introduction.... I believe MS will also kill the WP7/7.5 Marketplace.
So, why support MS and their WP 7/7.5 crazy ecosystem? If you want WP 8, don't buy WP 7/7.5 now. Buy something else first.

WP runs only managed code, so it will be quite easy for WP8 to run apps developed for WP 7.x. WiMo 6.x is incompatible with WP7, since WiMo actually had native apps, which the WP7 does not have. Furthermore, the WiMo apps rely on a completely different GUI, so running WiMo apps on WP7 would have required a dual GUI system similar to the one Windows 8 will have for PCs. On a smartphone it would not have made much sense.
Also for GSMArena staff: WiMo devices were still outselling WP7 devices in 2010 and continued to sell for the whole of 2011 in the US. Microsoft no longer gives separate stats for WiMo and WP, but independent analysts have evaluated that WiMo 6.x sold about as much as WP7 in 2011. So the platform is not dead yet. In fact the shutting down of the Marketplace can be seen as a deliberate way to try and kill WiMO, which MS no longer wants to support.

Indeed, WP is not WinMo, but WP7 is based on Windows Embedded, the same as WinMo. This doesn't mean that they more than this in common. On the other hand, WP8 will not be based on the Windows Embedded or CE, but on a new system, derived from the Windows 8 OS for PC/Tablets. So, yes, WP8 will be re-written from scratch, but it will be 100% backwards compatible.

Well, I am still using Samsung i900 with Windows Mobile 6.1 (6.5 but the phone didn't like it ... unstable for my phone) ...
Well, I am not moving to Windows Mobile 7.x because I don't like its interface.
BTW, I bought the Samsung Galaxy Y Duos S6102 :)... my Samsung B5702 is dying ... :(

Android/Google didn't care if the software developer create for android 1.1 or 1.6 or 2.1 or 2.2 or 2.3. Android/Google won't delete old version apps just because new version come out.
It's the developer that decide which android version number is required as their minimum OS.

and when WP8.0 is out, it won't be merged with 7.5 because the same things about 7.5 and 8.0 is only the metro UI. inside 8.0 and 7.5 is two different beast. 7.5 is on CE kernel just like WM, whereas the 8.0 is on NT kernel just like Windows the PC version.
