imho people are missing the essential: surface duo, essentially, is NOT a smartphone. is a pocketable, internet linked, office tool equipped, in subsidiary, with a phone facility, targeting, as most microsoft products do, specific group of users (ex students taking classes notes, kindle and equivalent alternative) and professionals, and not the masses. as a matter of fact it is missing most characteristics that make a smartphone attractive for the common user: no slickness of the dimensions (looks, feels and will be used rather like the old times paper notebooks carried in the chest pocket), no fancy camera(s) on the back, no display large or fast enough for gaming or watching movies, no fancy looks with slim chins or useless waterfalls.

Two things, do I have to open up the thing every time I get a call? I don't think I like that and probably the hinges will wear out over time, what's the benefit that makes it worth to open each time you get a call? Secondly Microsoft has left behind their hardware customers again and again and again, it wouldn't be surprised that if this thing won't take off they will most likely do the same.

this is a typical microsoft product , this focus to much on input methods , multi tasking and web browsing , typing editing and surfing will be easy to live with , however that hinge in the midle will limit media consumption ( watching movies for ex ) and since its a thin device with two screens battery life will suffer a bit

Excites? If this came out in 2016. Sony, ZTE, Lenovo even LG already worked on this kind of design. Nothing special really. Of course those older devices were thicker and got way more bezels.

It's an excellent form factor
with loads of potential
I can use the other screen for typing
for playing games
it's like true multitasking at least with two windows

Just make it less wide and that's it. It shoud atlest fit in the hand because one handed usage is dead now.
