iPhone 8 SE direct competitor is Pixel 3a only. But compared to the pixel, the new SE brings Apple's best CPU currently but it won't excel on the camera department as it'll have a single 12MP camera, the same sensor as on the iPhone 8 series: a 1/3 sensor with 1.22 micron pixels and f/1.8 aperture, but the CPU should improve the photography compared to the 8. It'll be the fastest device you can buy for $399 though...

They would have more market apeal if they opt for a "older/cheaper" like A12, but adding TOF for the front facing camera and full memoji suport and bigger battery.
Other then that, who have a 6S, 7 or 8 will have no real reason to replace them for the new SE.

Of course that there are some benefits from their government.
Only the hardware of 11 Max Pro is $490. The final cost probably pass $600 easily.
There is no way a $450 device has hardware that costs more than $250.

There seems to be a pattern developing. Every 4 years take a 2 year old iPhone and add the latest internals.
In 2012, Apple should have taken the 2009 iPhone 3GS and added internals from the 2011 iPhone 4S and the 326ppi retina screen. If priced right, it would have sold like hotcakes.
I'm a big fan of the iPhone 3GS, so maybe Apple could make a classic line by adding 2019 internals and a retina screen. All for the bargain price of £299. So not massively undercutting the iPhone 8S/SE2.
