Judging by those DxoMark sample pics Pixel's camera cannot compete with Samsung and Huawei.S10+ shoots some great photos,business as usual with P30 Pro.Even last year's Mate 20 Pro is at Pixel's level,but I believe a better phone,for few hundred $$$ less...

If we are just basing Googles willingness to do something custom with hardware or not, then look no further than the radar sensor they have included. This cost extra and plenty in R&D too. So clearly Google is prepared to do custom hardware.
Since even Sony phones don't do so well and they can customize hardware all they like, it shows how much more important post processing and software is. In this respect Google is doing just fine.

Look at Intel and being stuck in 14nm. There's nothing left to squeeze for the IMX363. They should do that to IMX586 and besides, it's easy for Google to port all of the algorithms in that new sensor. They can squeeze it out again for the next Pixel to discover what it can do.

Besides, Google wants to demonstrate how their software processing is superior to other brands' and how it can overcome the physical limitation of a small smartphone sensor, which means they actually prefer to stick to inferior hardware.
