Nick Tagataka, 22 Oct 2019Pixel 4: https://cdn.dxomark.com/wp-content/uploads/medias... moreObviously Google prefer noisy photo to uplift the dark shadow of image. But it fails miserably because they forget that small sensor will never challenge big sensor in capturing light and dynamic range. It's just law of physic that can't be overcame by computational photography.

They explain the score from the very beginning:
"The Pixel 4 remains slightly behind such recent top performers as the Huawei Mate 30 Pro (131 points), largely due to the lack of both an ultra-wide camera and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. These omissions put the Google’s device at an immediate disadvantage compared to the triple- and quad-cam devices in our wide-angle and bokeh testing, and that affects its overall ranking."

In fairness to the Pixel 4, camera is the single most overrated aspect when comparing smartphones. So what if the P4 only scored slightly lower than a S10+? The differences between photos are negligible. We're splitting hairs.
Samsung owners might get lucky if they get two major updates. Then Samsung will forget about them and focus pushing as much hardware. My LG G5 only got one major update. Then LG completely abandoned us.
The Essential Phone is the first Android that experienced four major Android versions (7, 8, 9, 10). I wouldn't be shocked if they become the first to have 5 versions. It essentially has the same specs as a Pixel 2 and their last major update should be Android 11.
Speaking of the Essential PH-1, I just took a photo inside a movie theater using Night Sight and it looks pretty amazing! My Pixel 3 might have a better camera but it's not like hundreds of dollars better when using the GCam apk.
Again, photo quality is the most dissected and most overrated thing on a smartphone. With computational photography improving, it should balance the playing field. Things like battery life and smooth UI matters more to me. That's why I could care less what DxO says.

Ha ha yes people with brains actually believe that OnePlus is ahead of Pixel in terms of image quality. Grow up Dxo. I actually used to follow you people back in the DSLR days. God whatever has happened to you!

Before Pixel was released.
Majority: The beast is coming, will dethrone Mate 30 Pro on DXO, it will better than Galaxy S/Note 10.
After Disappointing release.
Everyone: Google should stick to software.

Well, it has 0 points of ultra wide.
There are phones that record 4K as default ( at least the unit used by dxo but not the ones sold, what a coincidence). Pixel does 1080p default.
Not that bad .....

There are a lot of noises in Pixel's photos even though it doesn't capture any finer detail than P30 Pro. Too aggressive shadow lifting maybe?
Nonetheless I'm thoroughly disappointed with this year's Pixel's camera performance. It's basically a Pixel 3's camera with a secondary telephoto lens, nothing special here.
