4.7" screen would be ideal to fit in my denim pocket and give good enough gaming experience, reading my ebooks or even watching youtube videos without the need of switching to my laptop often. anything bigger means bulkier and oversized for my trouser pocket or to fit ergonomically in my palm.

i'm ultra fat, so i'm fine with my 7.7" tablet with 3g since it fits in my oversized jeans pockets (I use the headphones/mic).

For how I use my phone, I'll take anywhere between 3.5 and 4.0 inches. 3.7 inches, depending on the size of the bezel, is probably the sweet spot. Bigger than that just becomes cumbersome for me. It negatively impacts one handed use, and with few exceptions makes the dimensions of the phone too big for my liking. I used to think the original HTC Desire was enormous, and pushing the boundaries of what I'd want to put in my pocket. Now your average Android flagship is a good centimetre taller and wider! But, indeed, smaller than 3.5 inches makes typing accurately on a touchscreen damn near impossible.

a good "mobile" phone should be easily portable - i.e 3.7~3.8" will be good. BUT it should have v.good zoom in/out and text reflow to make browsing / reading etc. more pleasant. yes text reflow & zoom ... that's where most phones simply suffice to a mediocre quality-few ever acheived perfection.

My N8 has 3.5 inch display... and yes, I wish it to be slightly bigger only... 4 inch is right where I want it to be! And some more pixels too...
Remember, that any larger than 4.5-5 inch means you're looking at a tablet... And even if it is just a phone, it will still take up a large space... won't it?
So, I agree with the study...
I think GSMArena should also conduct a study about people's dream phone specs... And the manufacturers can take a clue too from it. :)

In my humble opinion, phone manufacturers have jumped the gun with screen size, making devices which hardly can be considered mobile. The Note is one example of a toy marketed as a serious work tool. A smartphone will never be a substitute for a PC or a laptop as far as work is concerned. However, not even a laptop will spend as much time at your side than a phone. I personally prefer phones with middle of the range screen sizes of around 3.2, 3.5". I was just about to go for the Sony Ericsson Mini before I saw it in person and realized it was too tiny for me. I love the design, but i needed something more manly; so the Live with Walkman it is :).
A friend of mine has the Galaxy SII and I can't say that I am missing anything that his phone has and mine doesn't. And if there are, I have louder speakers and I can just say I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

Interesting to see that women would be happy with less than 4". ;) Joking aside, I think 4" - 4.3 is ideal for me. I have big hands/fingers so anything smaller than that would be uncomfortable for me!

I find it utterly ridiculous that phones are becoming tablet PCs. I never want a phone that I can't hold with one hand, and on which I can't swip across the entire screen real estate with just my thumb.
The conclusion of the study is incorrect. The hypothesis might've included "ideal smartphone screen size", but the survey only gives you "popular smartphone screen size".
