Quite comfortable with my Galaxy S II at 4.3 inches. Since I'm now accustomed to the large screen, I find anything below that screen size repulsive.
The Galaxy S II is pocket friendly (it easily slips in and out of my jeans pocket), if you use it without some bulky protective case.

Until recently, I was skeptical about big screens. I thought 4.0 inch screens were huge, not to mention 4.3 or 4.5. But when I got my HTC EVO 3D, I changed my mind. My preferred screen sizes are between 4.0 and 4.3 inches. Bigger screens than that are not as comfortable and smaller screens are too small for my fingers. 4.3 inch screens are perfect for gaming, youtube videos and everyday usage.

I use a Note. Before note it was S2. The difference between Note and S2 is like the difference between a 42" TV and a 32". I would prefer Note over smaller S2 Screen. Beyond Note anything bigger would be cumbersome.

I reckon the ideal size should be 3.5-4 so that it can readily fit into the pocket without much hassel.
Having said that, the resolution of the screen should be good enough (say 480x800)to make the texts more crisp & readable while browsing.

Having measured my all my trousers' front pockets (no more jeans I guess!) and worked out the minimum size to do a minimum of scrolling, I'd like a phone screen of around 6 to 6.5 inches (152 mm to 165 mm) diagonally, provided the overall phone/tablet length is no more than about 170 mm, and the width no more than about 100 mm. So the bezel needs to be phone-like, not tablet-like, with the screen stretching to near the edges of the device. At the moment, all the 7" tablets are just too big to fit in my front trouser pockets, especially when sitting. Maybe Samsung are planning something that size? So far their larger screened devices drop 1.2 inches each model: 10.1, 8.9, 7.7, 5.3 inches, except for the missing 6.5 inches. Also, when will more clothes manufacturers start taking note of the increasing size of phones and start making pockets and trouser legs a bit more roomy to handle the growing phones and phoneblets/phablets/tabphones/phonetabs, not to mention for skirts and dresses.

well, there is NO such thing as a perfect size. to begin with, the size of the HAND is to be considered. besides that, the browsing/playing/talking quota gives you the optimal size of the screen. i agree that Samsung Galaxy Note makes you look a little funny when you use it as a phone. but hey once you use one of these marvelous devices... you never look funny at somebody else using it. using a headset if an obvous choice. to make a final comment i do agree with the folks believing that even if the smartphone has a bigger screen it has to be light and slim enough. sent from a SGS II.
