Sony makes gaming consoles. Sony makes phones. But a gaming phone? It tried it just once and never again.

It was a brilliant concept and ahead of it's time. But sadly miss marketed. Plus the fact you had PSP then PSP GO and this. How many portable consoles can you bring out. All doing the same thing. Shame. But again idea.

I honestly wouldn't mind a modern take on this.

    5.7"+ IGZO 1080p; 120Hz display
    6GB/8GB RAM
    128/256GB ROM w/ microSD slot
    Front-Facing stereo speakers
Charging port and headphone jack (with 24-bit DAC) on the SIDE of the phone
Removable 6,000 mAH battery (see Moqi)
Snapdragon 730G or Helio G70 (don't knock it. Its performance is actually good)
REAL Global Bands (because it's 2019 for crying out loud)
The slider controller having a small joystick and capacitive triggers
    MIL-STD-G rating
    Internal Cooling

Price this thing starting at like $550 and it would sell like hotcakes.

Small batteries, small cameras, less screen %.

      - Now people complain if a phone has bezel of 6mm.
      - people complain if screen is less than 90% of the front
      - people complain if battery is less than 4000, but dont think if they are spending more time on the phone than they were supposed to.
      - people complain if phone has more than 8.4mm thickness

There is nothing much to be done to phones today, just upgrade of internals.

Sony was really stupid for not caring about PS Vita, it feels like it was an awesome console but released in the wrong time. See Nintendo Switch, they're similar consoles in many ways and Vita could've been a big deal if Sony did something about it.

Kangal, 27 Oct 2019This was an "okay" first attempt, but they really could've ... moreLOL, exynos? All exynos have bad gpu compared to snapdragon.

Super LCD is just comercial name used by HTC. It is supplied by JDi, same company that supplied LCD to Sony and Apple

How come this title when they have at least 1 and 5 compatible with its console? Isn't that stupid?

Actually Sony made a smart move after very long time. While PS4 remote play for all phones is a great thing for console owners the Dualshock 4 support is good for everyone because it's not only the best game controller but also most supported so it will work for native titles that supports it & with emulators such as PSP which still have a great collection of quality games (which can be downloaded for free) that look & feel great & without adds, time box or other limitations.

AnonD-558092, 27 Oct 2019Games are and will remain the main problem with "gaming" ph... moreThe problem is that most mobile gamers are normies, and they're happy with crap like PUBG & Fortnite.

There won't be any serious games on the platform unless the users demand for it, which they aren't doing... and thus you rarely see any worthy games on the platform.

Make an updated Xperia Play with latest flagship-tier Snapdragon chipset and Android version alongside more support for mobile games, then I might buy one. Since I have my Motorola Moto Z2 Force with moto gamepad mod, my Bluetooth gaming controller has been collecting dust in the drawer.

AnonD-558092, 27 Oct 2019Games are and will remain the main problem with "gaming" ph... moreSwitch works because of 3 reasons
                          1. It is 300$ device which is both a tablet and a console, the cheapest phone to do that is 900(ROG II)
                          2. Nintendo's IP + Indie Goldmine. People are fine paying 60 for a complete game but are not fine to have p2w model
                          3. Its thermals are miles better than any mobile phone, so processor gets more leverage to perform better than the build suggests...

Back in the day, I couldn't afford this device, yet I still wanted this phone to succeed very badly. But alas, my bad luck won!

I remember back in 2013 I was at my friends house watching him play fifa on his Xperia Play, I miss playing on that phone! Good memories :3

Games are and will remain the main problem with "gaming" phones. Back then there was no worthy game. Today, there are even less thanks to Pay2Win invading our lives.

Phones can do it. The Switch is underpowered with an old and inefficient but otherwise normal (in that it's not a custom solution made specifically for games) SoC, yet has massive success and tons of legitimately good games (but as the article highlights, a lot of them are first party Nintendo games) but P2W is too lucrative to make an effort.

Perhaps people saw the Xperia Play as a PSP that can't play their physical UMD PSP games and just ignored it.

Anyway, back to my Switch for some real fun.

This was an "okay" first attempt, but they really could've improved things before release. If anything the hardware was good for 2009 or 2010, but very outdated beyond that. Sony could've at least give it a proper successor, one that would've been a better product and earn better sales. Even in Japan, the Xperia Play was mostly a flop, and that's coming from the country where the PS Vita was a success. Here's how they should have done it:

                                  Sony Xperia Pro, USD $499, Q1 2011
                                  32GB Storage, 1GB RAM, Exynos 4212 (32nm, 2x Cortex A9, Mali 400 mp4)
                                  4.3 inch, 854 x 480 resolution, Super LCD-IPS (no burn-in, less power, better brightness)
                                  Removable 1800mAh, 180 grams, 13mm x 65mm x 130mm dimensions
Tilt-Slide (Nokia E7), Four Shoulder Pads, two Nubs replacing the two TrackPads
Supports PS3 Remote Play, With Native PSP and PS1 emulation built-in
Can also emulate Dreamcast, NDS, N64, DOS, GBA, SNES, Sega, Atari.

...and if it proves successful like I postulate it to be, here's what they could've done next:
                                  Sony PS Phone, USD $599, Q3 2011
                                  64GB Storage, 2GB RAM, PSVita SoC (32nm, 4x Cortex A9, SGX 543 mp4)
                                  4.7 inch, 1280 x 720 resolution, Super LCD-IPS (no burn-in, less power, better brightness)
                                  Removable 2200mAh, 190 grams, 12mm x 70mm x 140mm dimensions
Tilt-Slide, Four Shoulder Pads, Two Joysticks (unscrewable)
Supports PS Vita downloads, PS3 Remote Play, Native Emulation of PSP and PS1
Can also emulate Dreamcast, NDS, N64, DOS, GBA, SNES, Sega, Atari.

...and if this also proves successful against iPhone 4S and Samsung S3, they could refresh:
Sony PS Phone Pro, USD $699, Q1 2014
                                  128GB Storage, 3GB RAM, New SoC (20nm, 4x Cortex A17, G6430 mp4)
                                  4.7 inch, 1920 x 1080 resolution, Super LCD-IPS (no burn-in, less power, better brightness)
                                  Removable 2500mAh, 200 grams, 12mm x 70mm x 140mm dimensions
Tilt-Slide, Four Shoulder Pads, Two Joysticks (unscrewable)
Supports PS Vita downloads, PS4 and PS3 Remote Play, Native Emulation of PSP and PS1
Can also emulate Dreamcast, NDS, N64, DOS, GBA, SNES, Sega, Atari.

As you can tell, I'm a sucker for things like the Nvidia Shield Handheld, GPD XD, and GPD Win2 portables.

I still want it. Sony should've released a successor to it.

the vita didn't flop, it just didn't do well in western markets
dualshock 4s were pretty much always supported via BT since android 6, just some brand here and there had some funky drivers still. still, get your facts straight lol

Remote play is just to make your phone the "TV".
                                        Different from game controls.
