Asus Zenfone 4 and ROG Phone likely to remain on Oreo

28 October 2019
There is no stable Android Pie in the near future, regular security updates should keep arriving.

And this ended up not even being true

You know people are complaining that this won't get any new features, but the phone and software itself have pretty much most features you'd find in a modern device now, and if it's not baked into it even running non rooted it's very easy to add a good amount of features via play store or emulate them. Oreo is still a supported OS for apps, and as far as an Android release goes it was one of the best ones for many reasons. Anyone that argues that, must not look into performance metrics per Android release. Ask a developer how "great" Android 10's new render changes are.

Fact is this is still a solid device, and updating to a newer OS will not equal to new features or better performance. Some of the half baked updates from the partners have been worse than the original OS shipped on the device. Ask iPhone 5s owners how the last supported version of iOS faired for them. Ask an LG V20 user how new OS updates did for their device. Don't get me started on Galaxy S II system updates.

So, it seems like i have to go for custom ROMs on my ZenFone 4 Pro :(
      Asus disappointed me...

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2019The camera on that is still good enough today, isn't it? It's not bad, still leaves a bit to be desired though. Although maybe I just have too high standards because I've barely found any (even new) phones that can beat the V30 in low light in the GSMArena photo sample test. Probably just a limitation of phones in general.

Jeez, and I thought LG was terrible for waiting so long to deliver pie on the 2 year old V30. Asus is the worst.

Just having a beer, 29 Oct 2019Yes, you can use the phones for that long as long as they d... moreUnless a team of hackers specifically target you with the bug present on your OS with outdated security updates, you are good. Again all these security updates are overrated. Most devices work just fine. Never heard of someone losing something valuable coz they had outdated security updates.

Most of the features on next version of OS can be had with a few tweaks and third party apps. In fact most Android features on newer versions were integrated into the OS from other skins like MIUI and Oxygen OS or lineage OS.

Im reading all your comments and I have to say I purchased a Zenfone 5z this year and software updates have been great so far (im on 9.0).

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2019Yes, it is a BIG deal. If it weren't then you'd have to buy... moreYes latest updates on iOS to give you features that existed on 5 Android years back.
Most flagships these days have a 2 year cycle before we start to see drastical change in the tech inside.

Most people said Samsung is worst in terms of updates yet Asus with their flagship does not even get 2 major updates whereas Samsung flagships got two major updates and the S7 edge what I heard are still getting security updates till now.
And that does not include all Samsung mid and low range phones last year also getting updates to Pie.
                        What a shame really.

I was bitten by Asus when I bought their ZF3 2 years ago. They are so bad with their software that they can even screw the bluetooth up. It was the only phone I ever had that cannot connect to my car, and their solution? Tell me to change my car!

Well, screw them! And now I just laugh at anyone who is stupid enough to pay Asus any money.

i agree, this is very bad move from asus.... and probably ROG2 will suffer the same destiny - no updates....
first i was impressed by ROG2 specs but this is definitely why i will never think about buying asus.

As of new OS version update - I appreciate receiving it, but more important is security updates. Those should be provided for years

This is why I hate Android phones. The updating is an absolute fucking joke. Even Android One scheme with "guaranteed 2 years of updates" is pretty sad meaning you'll only get 1 major update and that's it. Meanwhile iPhone 4 is getting security update because of some time issues because it's so frigging old. 9 freaking years old phone and apparently people are still using it enough that Apple give a damn updating it still. Any Android vendor would just laugh at you... Just epecting any update on that old Android of any kind would be an absolute miracle.
