03 November 2019
Apple and Google have gone all-in on face recognition, other makers prefer in-display fingerprint readers. Which side are you on?

I use the s10e and use my index finger to unlock when the phone is on a table face up, works really fast.... Even in the dark :)

I will go for fingerprint scanner because I don’t like big bezels.

Designated fingerprint scanner is the best option imo. In-display is slower, face recognition is not secure and also slow.

Why not give an option to select a normal fingerprint sensor?!

TL,DR= I would choose In-display fingerprint readers, but only if they work => equal or greater than their capacitive parents (I haven't used them yet so I can't comment).

I really liked the front capacitive FPS on my old S6, it was unlocked & ready to go before I had fully removed it from my pocket.
Obviously there's no room on the front with high StB ratio displays which leaves options for back or side, either is fine by me.

I prefer slim top & bottom bezels, especially if they house great quality stereo Front Firing Speakers).
I won't ever (unless I'm forced) have a notch interrupting the screen, I maybe forced to if OEM's go 21:9 ratio making the device too long, 16.3cm is my pocket's limit.

Maybe the In-display optical/ ultrasonic FPS can emulate the capacitive already or in the near future (Idk because I haven't tried them yet, but it looks like the ultrasonic FPS that Qualcomm supplied Samsung weren't quite ready).

I like the choice on my Note9, in order of
                1) Capacitive FPS on the back (great security & convenience (although not super convenient as the older below the display placement).
                2) Iris scan (great security & convenience if hands are wet or messy).
                3) Intelligent scan, uses both 2 & 4 (not used yet, will be poor security if 4 unlocks instead of 2 & 4, should be convenient if hands are wet or messy).
                4) Face scan, (not used yet, poor security but should be convenient if hands are wet or messy).

They collected all of your fingerprint data. And they are looking for face data now of course. Wise spy.

Am using in display fingerprint scanner. Its working great, but I think it's pretty unsave. Glad I am no popular person. If so. I'd rather use password only (if it werent that inconvinient typing in 8 symbols all the time). I feel pretty unsecure being scanned with a dot matrix whenever I lift my phone just to unlock a phone. Wish the inscreen fingerprint would be more secure. For now, a password is still best, a rear/side mounted fingerprint reader is second best.

I don't use either (team passwords here) but if I had to, I'd definitely use a side mounted fingerprint scanner. Under screen readers still need to be polished, rear mounted readers really clash with the design, especially when I put on a protective mask so all kinds of dust and crap can get into the giant hole in the middle, and it generally looks ugly. So side mounted are the best imo.

No, old side mounted fingerprint is the best! Issue-free, convenient, and ready whenever we hold the phone. I miss xz1 compact.

I’ve used FaceID since the iPhone X and it is by far superior to TouchID in so many ways. TouchID’s accuracy was hit and miss, and impossible to use with sweaty or dirty fingers. FaceID works every time, no hassle. Can’t imagine not having it now.

Though from experience, I know Samsung is bit hit or miss with it. But on my end, it gets unlocked mostly within first try. Just saying due to all those comments saying how unreliable it is.

And of course I would take fingerprint scanner any day over face ID.

Plus if you put a screen protector, even after you re-register your fingerprint again, it could work even slower and less secure. The physical right now still better than those options in my opinion
