Samsung is shutting down its custom CPU core department, will use standard ARM cores

04 November 2019
The Exynos 9830 will likely be the first chipset to ditch the Mongoose custom cores.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon monopoly seems to be what everybody wants, seeing how almost every effort made by MediaTek, Exynos, or any other chipmaker that isn't Qualcomm trying to compete in the market is immediately turned down by consumers.

Though factors such as compatibility and manufacturing convenience may justify the argument; still, monopoly is far from ideal for us consumers. Then, they would have the ability to dictate prices, and perhaps worse, control the rate at which the market develops.

I'm no expert, what I said are just thoughts from my own perspective. And there is Apple to compete with anyway, if you count them on the same league.

Exynos is bad, Kirin is better.

MrPhone, 04 Nov 2019Finally...the rubbish chipsets will be gone But it will st... moreExynos were literally the best in biz for almost a decade. They only had 2 bad years and you finally want them out, lower the competition and have even more terrible Qualcomm chipsets that nobody can challenge despite of how much weaker are they from their primary competition (Apple chips)? Only mobile fans so low...

After Linux on dex, another disastrous news from Samsung. Back to back loss of dominance... what else is coming?

MrPhone, 04 Nov 2019Finally...the rubbish chipsets will be gone But it will st... moreSo you never followed to know that from s1 to s8 exynos was overall superior.
Usually in cpu, efficiency, and audio.
Exynos was actually even better in gpu 4 or 5 years in all 10 generations. Either by brute force or sustainability. So sometimes in cpu, gpu, efficiency, and audio.

mixa, 04 Nov 2019Why even bother making these weird and inefficient Exynos S... moreSince you're referring to the issues of the s9 and s10 generations of throttling due to being new in designing larger cores.... that doesn't include the s8.
So when you say the last decent one that actually is the s8/note8.
However even that is false because these last two were more than decent. They had issues but were still no doubt flagship level socs that could only be beaten by other flagship socs.

The issue with the last two generations were simply that samsung went to design larger more powerful cores. So they are still working on efficiency as bigger cores by nature are more power hungry and generate more heat.
Apple went through the same thing when they started making larger cores. And it's stupid that someone in samsung made this decision when they were getting much closer to a more refined cpu design.

can we have a combo of two cpus in one phone?

This is ridiculous. Some executive executives somewhere thinking they know better when they have no clue.
So much progress was made and they within the next two generations you would have seen major gains.
Apple went through the same struggle making large custom cores. Heating and throttling.

To me, this is actually sad news.
It basically says that they are reducing their R&D division. Which is sad because Samsung was acquiring ImaginationTechnologies, so they could also have Custom GPU in their SoC. But they reversed that decision to stick with Standard ARM Mali GPU, with some expertise bought in from AMD's Radeon division. And that looks little more than say just guidance, rather than optimised drivers, software stack, and hardware suite.

Going standard might be a wise business decision, since some/most of that custom performance and efficiency, it might have simply been eaten up by AndroidOS and it's Apps getting more and more bloated whilst being a high-level code (as opposed to native).

ARM cores have become very good in recent years, but the progress has really plateaued. For instance, the Cortex A75 is comparable to Intel Core M, just at a lower thermal profile. However Intel is pushing forward, and AMD's Zen2 cores are impressive on their own right. Not to mention the recent revision of RISC-V puts them slightly behind the Cortex A73 performance and efficiency. Whereas Apple's Lightning Cores are slightly ahead of the Cortex A73 performance but at the thermal profile of the Cortex A53. So clearly there are benefits to more research and custom architectures.

Hopefully, the next-gen Exynos variants won't be like the current-gen variants (S8, S9, S10) but moreso like the old-gen variants as seen in the Samsung Galaxy S1, S2, S3. For those interested; the variant in the S4 edged out the QSD 600 by a fluke, but S5 lost to the QSD 800, and Note4 again fluked it on the QSD 805. Don't have to mention the clown-show that was the S6 Exynos 7420 versus the QSD 810 fire-crotch.

AnonD-454049, 04 Nov 2019If everyone switches to qualcomm they're going to start low... moreIt didn't even worry Qualcomm one bit that Exynos's largest cores are far more powerful than their largest cores on their flagship chipsets. What made you think it'll make them more competitive with now an Exynos chipset that's about the same level as its Snapdragon counterpart?

If Exynos is to leave the competition, Qualcomm would retain their thing and it wouldn't affect the quality of their chipsets, not even one bit.
After all, they're just customizing ARM's CPU designs every year.
Exynos had a lot of potential against Apple, and all that's ever left for them to do are to:
1 - Find a way to make the CPU performance more efficient, as it is prone to thermal throttling, and
2 - Improve their GPUs significantly, at least on par with Qualcomm's it must be.
If they have done them and sold them to other OEMs as well, then perhaps they could've given Qualcomm a strong fight and practically step up their game as well, but they've given up way too soon and figured that this thing wouldn't work enough.
I guess it's for something good reason that we don't know yet.

Samsung should use only Snapdragon. Exynos Kirin MediaTek don't matter. They can't beat Snapdragon. Even my low end phone powered by Snapdragon still works good. My previous phone with MediaTek was useless after three months.

Love the Community, 04 Nov 2019How come it didn't replace A55? I'm sick of seeing these Lo... moreBecause it is wiser to use them compared to the A57 ones, as the A55 and A53 are much more efficient.
Besides, low performance cores don't even have to be that powerful. Even an A53 would still do for today's flagship chipsets (you have the high performance cores to handle the heavy loads, damn it!).
Heck, I'd even go as far as recommending to use a super low power single A35 core for the absolute lowest power draw for simplest tasks like running the clock, notifications, etc.

Back to my main point. A53 and A55 are more than adequately enough to handle the mid level performance requirements by the phone. It will only then switch to the big cores when more demanding tasks will be performed.
The A57 is even more powerful, but there's no demand yet for its performance in the mid category, and it would be wiser to use the more energy efficient A55 cores for those tasks, until such time that they're no longer enough for those things. And that time is NOT now.

They can't even make a chipset that could match the year before last year's flagship chip from Apple, let alone last year's and this year's!
