i think the current micro sim like in iphone 4/lumia 800/motorol Razr. thats the best one. any smaller and they would be lost. there fiddly enough.

Given that most flagships are 4.x"+ monster screens with huge batteries, I really don't see a reason to "save precious space" inside phones, especially when the argument is about 1sqcm of SIM space.

This argument should be null and void when they put a tray inside to hold the sim thats as big as a normal sim.It is a good idea to reduce space inside the mobile but NOT if your using a tray to hold the damn thing..EEPROM should be better than this arrangement.

This discussion is totally ridiculous. When Apple announced the micro-SIM for their iPhone 4 they argued with the gain of space for electronics and battery. If you compare iPhone 4 and Galaxy S you see that Apples efforts are worth nothing. Both phones are mostly comparable in size and weight (especially thickness) but the Galaxy S sports a bigger screen plus a bigger (and swappable) battery. So there is no technical requirement (only company policy).
Long story short: There is no need for smaller SIM-cards. Of course you can reduce its size to 50 % or below. But what's the point to reduce "almost nothing" to "even more nothing"?
Finally it's humans who are going to use devices with their hands. Reducing size therefor is somewhat limited.

Anonymous, 21 Mar 2012Did you even read the article? Apple's design is backed by ... morebacked by the design itself of by money and greed? think about it. The design chosen will be patented to the creator.
If Nokia patented everything from UI to form factor, cellphone tech will be dead in the water since it first arrived. No inovations will be there. Look at what apple is doing now with their patent hogging.
think about it, if Nokia patented the Signal Bar display.... the phone call button... phones storing personal numbers of contacts in the phone memory...

Apple only think money is King.....set-up subsidiaries just to get higher voting power, so that they can license their design and get a cut in every phone that is being sold using the nano-sim. This is a great move since the next iPhone probably won't sell.......now revenue is guaranteed no matter what happens to iPhone

What's the reason for making SIM cards smaller and smaller? (The 'old' size has been adequate for years)
It's not like phones are smaller than they used to be...

AnonD-3441, 21 Mar 2012Looks like the dirty Apple wants to play dirty as their usu... moreI think Nokias design will be the push to insert, and push again to remove. Similar to the simcard holder for N8 and E7. Similar to how you insert micro SD Cards.
As for Apples Tray design, im thinking it will be similar to how CD Rom Drive tray is? which takes more space imo.
I also remember phones having this tray for simcards and it was really flimsy and easy to break. Apple is rich enough to pay people to vote for them and money spent will be cashed back in return when other phone manufacturers pay royalties to use the tray.

we already have a tri-sim phone w/ a normal simcard. imagine it w/ nano-sim. quad-sim? hahaha
dual sim would be the standard, leaving enough spaces for whatever hardware the manufacturers would want to put in.
I'm an avid fanboi of android(specially motorola)...not much of a fun of nokia and i'd go against APPLE for my droids anytime of the day but for this... i would have to agree to apple. a small sim would be awkward to hold, insert, remove, using just our fingers. A tray will give comfort specially for those w/ bighand like mine. It's just APPLE is already an airhead w/ bigballs that nokia and the others feel that letting apple have his way on this technology would make apple's balls grow bigger.
they are dead serious about this. can't you see apple having a big H#rd on? i'm sure that apple is seeing PATENTS and LISCENSING that they can use for Future Patent wars

Looks like the dirty Apple wants to play dirty as their usual business. They see money, more money. Extra money if user loose the pin, if they somehow break the tray and who knows what more. Next thing they will patent is the Tray for sim.
By the way, is it just me or the article didn't explain what Nokia's design is? (I will re-read one more time.)

Anonymous, 21 Mar 2012cant we just have a normal sim card design How does it matter ?it would matter if it's going to be beneficial to Apple, not the rest. Which is bullying. Again. They're too greedy. They're just going to make more money by licensing it to other OEMs.
