i dont think some people understand some things, ill try to explain
1 symbian and the developers for it have moved from nokia to accenture, its been in the news. so if nokia says they will not support symbian after 2016, accenture might continue developing it. and lets be honest, they'we done a great job so far with belle and the upcoming fp1/carla.
even according to statcounter, the symbian share went up while ios and android went down
http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/02/symbian-increases-share-in-march-says-statcounter-still-top-mobile-os-worldwide-image-heavy/
2 us market does not equal the world market. while ios and android reign supreme there, symbian rules other, much bigger markets (china, india, whole africa) and i dont think its a matter of availability. people there have choices and they choose nokia.
3 n9 has meego, n900 has maemo, but they're similar underneath the ui. so if n9 was the last meego, that doesnt mean a similar device will appear with meelo or something and will be even more specatular. and n9 missing apps? most people with smartphones today dont know about updates, apps and such. should they care about millions of apps?
4 wp is still new and it had a slow start. however android too had a slow start and i believe that with wp8 things will change. the problem with wp7 is availability. you go into a shop what do you see: iphone on a plinth, 20-30 android devices, couple of symbian, bb-s and maybe 0-2 wp7 devices. so what would a layman choose? its a mystery why android doesnt have 90% of market

Nokia Rulz, 03 Apr 2012But don't forget Nokia was smart back then not to choose Go... moreProbably you have not understood what i said, Nokia dint deny Google. Its the other way around, Google Rejected Nokia. i have also specified the reasons of denial. refer to my earlier posts.
There wasnt any thing new about unlocked bootloaders, infact Samsung released with unlocked bootloaders right from SGS, the first of its fame. subsequently, HTC LG MOTO followed later due to increasing request from Userbase.

blueglue, 03 Apr 2012Yes Mate, Reviving Symbian is one important aspect.
We ... moreBut don't forget Nokia was smart back then not to choose Google's Android because of the recent user data leak scandal.
I correctly bet that many Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, Asus, Dell and Sony customers were furious with those kind of security loopholes on the Android models due to the (back then) illegal bootloader unlocking and 'free' Android apps filled with viruses.
Cheaper to pre-install? Please, who are you Android fans kidding? Android costs almost an estimated $US200 to $US305 per handset from its start in 2005 up till now because it's based on hard-coded Linux, worst than the micro-coded Symbian's free cost to Nokia and the simple-coded Windows Phone's cost of est. $US150 to $US205.
So don't complain why Nokia didn't choose Android as they care about making their new phones smart, stylish and safe to use with what Windows Phone offers than Android's semi-uncompetitive market share.

i think developing / supporting symbian till 2016 is a option for nokia when yime comes wp cannot compete with ios or android in future... Atleast they saw what was the impact to consumer of developing symbian, probably have a way to gain back their loyal users...

I still feel Nokia should consider about Symbian a bit more. It's still a good OS. Has a lot of potential. Becoming to dependent on Microsoft can really harm Nokia in the long run. They should develop Symbian.

We cant say its a wrong move to chose MS, they have come so far, cannot revert it. but android would have given Nokia a quick jump in sales and profits, considering the low cost of manufacturing and the booming android + the already good will of Nokia, If only NOKIA was not "adamant" in PROPOSING Google to alter the usage of Google Maps with NOKIA Maps and the PIM DATA.
I really wonder why they went down in revenues, considering the sales figures they had till 2009. i do understand that market share is not directly proportional to profits, but still 76% of market share is not a small number.

blueglue, 03 Apr 2012May be, but it depends on Nokia, as known.
should Nokia ... more
WP might work...but the problem is nokia created their niche w/ symbian...and leaving that platform w/out any support would cost them a large share of the market.
hmmm...so if they just realize that WP is a big error...that means they are going back to revive and improve symbian but they just don't have enough courage to admit that they did a wrong move. is my understanding correct?

Verbal_Criminal, 03 Apr 2012oh...ok.. so there is still hope for symbian then?
May be, but it depends on Nokia, as known.
should Nokia have the courage to admit where they went wrong, or rather say what they lacked, and revive it for the benefit of customers, Yes there is a way to get this up.
Example of what MS has done with the WP platform, revived everything from scratch. although MS donot stand out in competition today, certainly they wont be lost in near future. they may not beat all the sales figures, but definitely they 'll make a mark. One can say that MS had enough funds to rewrite the o/s , nokia isnt poor either, where are all the funds they earned till 2008/9? i honestly feel Elop is not the one to be blamed ,atleast this point.
Now the question is does Nokia have any such intention? Nokia was "adamant" in its own way till date, neglected the trend and lost the user base, US, UK and europe - very fertile markets, symbian lost there. failure of N9 attributes towards the low commitment of nokia from a user prospective.
Why Nokia chose MS but not Google, considering the 'openess' of andorid (like Symbian) and go for 'liscenced' MS (which adds more cost of manufacturing)??
probably they should concentrate on low - mid range phones, keep the pricing appropriately. at this moment, its in their best interest not to aim for droid or ios sales figures, its a league apart.
