Flashback: Nokia N9 was ahead of everyone but went nowhere

08 December 2019
Nokia's Linux efforts faced internal and external pressure, but they did deliver this jewel - only for it to be quickly discontinued in favor of WP7.

Nokia demise has killed many technologies. Specially camera tech. Sad for industry and consumers.
Microsoft is a white in phone industry. It was such a stupid decision at Nokia's part to go with Microsoft.

Nokia was killed by Microsoft...to be specific Steven Elop

Looking from perspective maybe even more actors than we suspect benefited from killing meego...the move deprived Europeans of controlling an ahead of time mobile Os so Who knows?

I had this n9 phone, it was fine phone for time being, i rooted it, flashed android on it. The meego os wasn't complete, there wasn't much software for it, so i got bored of it and sold away, because the samy note series was much better and powerful.

This was my favorite phone ever. Community software added so many cool features. Such a shame that Microsoft trojan horsed Nokia.

Looking back I'm still in disbelief at how hard Nokia failed. Pretty much every decision they made (or refused to tackle) was the worst one possible. It's still somewhat frustrating as it's no a "hindsight is 20/20" situation. Not only were their own employees aware of the right course of action, the entire world of casual tech followers was screaming at them to go right as this was unfolding, hoping they succeed - they had the tech, the people, the money, yet they kept on turning left instead, taking literally the worst possible paths. I still can't believe that this can happen, as it's probably a case study for the stupidest downfall of any business ever.

It's not space science. if there are enough people to buy a phone with that OS, which is easy for China to do, there will be that many developers to create apps for that platform, which is easy for china given the population, not only that, India with huge number of people using chinese phones and UI, will switch given the user base and apps availability. India also has huge international level IT and Cloud solutions. Now, what do we need else? CLoud?? That is where Huawei has started it's efforts long long ago, with huawei cloud. Sure google took, 10 years.. but now the time is different. Technlogy is moving forward 20 times faster.

N9 was THE phone whose rumours, news, leaks and reviews I followed to hell and back. I was so excited with this thing, at a time android was such a bumbling, stumbling effort, eating so much battery and resources. iOS was a an expensive laugh and windows phone was an imbecile not having even the basic copy-paste.

Would never forgive Microsoft for what it did to MeeGo and Nokia in general.

Oh and B.T.W. 84,000 units. That's the number they produced of these pretty babies, and the number I'm still quoting from memory.

April 25, 2014 is going to be remembered as the 9/11 equivalent in the mobile world.

Yes, a lot of cellphone companies had disappeared here and there, but neither of them went out the way Nokia Device and Services did. The magnitude of that disaster could only be surpassed if the same thing happened to Apple.

Just as some information for those who were not there at the time: Nokia was literally the only OEM that had its own platform, aside from Apple. By 2011, they had their Maps Service (Here maps), their music streaming platform (Nokia Music/Mixradio), their Store (Ovi), their PC app for flashing and doing backups and their own OS (Symbian/Meego).

But then, the trojan horse from Microsoft started moving his hands in order to cause division inside the company, and well, you all know how that ended. The worst part of all this is that Nokia went down not because of bad sales or bad hardware, heck, even Symbian had apps and support. It went down due to some higher ups worrying more about getting money than staying on the business.

Samsung wave and Nokia N9 were very good alternatives with excellent screens and great build and backed by two of the leading mobile manufacturer of the day. But couldn't sustain against goole and apple os. I wish it had done better.
Jolla revived meego as sailfish OS. Samsung has tizen as alternative but all are only kept as backup or future plans in case if anything happens in Android world.
