NoNoNoNo, 11 Dec 2019Let me picture this out for you...Computers way back, as bi... morePhones SOC have limited space. RAM is built into the SOC.
So that tiny square houses everything. RAM / Cache / CPU cores / GPU / USB controllers / LTE /etc etc. Less the storage.
Most PC, intel or amd have the luxury of SPACE. Places you can stack tons of rams, wifi controllers and what not. And because its simply just a CPU with minor GPU, it RUNS circles around SOC processors.
So, on a SoC, space is at a premium. Instead of spending on things that is rarely used, rather spend that space to make bigger cores? Faster cache? Faster ram? Instead of blind capacity.
Qualcomm realise this mistake. STOPped the cores wars.. and the ram wars.. and start improving each component.
But that said, having massive RAM have its benefits, things launch faster since they are kept in memory, and power consumption is relatively similar, be it 4GB 8GB or 12GB in the SOC. But if the OS keep killing process to preserve battery power.. that benefit goes down the drain. Its all about a balance..

Huawei topped doxmark score list with most devices being top ten.
Because ompetitors cameras are just a fifty shades of landfill.

So, If you try to think about what you were trying to ask, it's like saying,"1MB ram? why do we need 1MB ram? I have a computer and it already runs smoothly with my 836KB RAM."
Change is constant as technology develops. That is why manufacturers always keep up with the latest and strongest feature they can provide because technology only evolves and moves forward.

like.. if we're going to think about how we use our phone on day-to-day tasks, does facebook/instagram/snapchat or any of those so-called mobile games need 12 GB of storage? let's say yes, you stream. so.. you're running 3 apps at the same time? a windows computer has 8GB of memory and is capable of the same. so the question remains, do you need 12GB?

Just because you dont see the use for it does not mean its meant for old people. Maybe you are the "granny" that only uses a smartphone for calls and sms? And before you bring up that mobile games are for people that cant afford a real gaming PC, I have a 2080ti on my rig and still use my phone a lot.

Shadocx, 10 Dec 2019The Kirin 980 came months after the SD 845, WTF are you say... moreWhat I meant is that the phones with kirin 980 came out 6 months before sd855 and at that time the sd845 was still the relevant snapdragon flagship. It doesn't matter when the snapdragon was announced and released but when the phones with it started coming out, which was March, April 2019. Not to mention that oneplus 7, xperia 1 and a lot of other competitors came out in May and June 2019.
It's the same now. The phones with kirin 990 5G are out and while the sd865 has been announced, galaxy s11, oneplus 8 and the rest will start coming out in March and beyond, so Huawei is yet again ahead of the curve.
My point is that if the phones with the new kirin come out in November, they should be compared with the phones that are out at the time, not with the ones that are being released in 5-6 months.
There are plenty of benchmark scores and videos online. Bear in mind that the kirin 990 has two versions and the one in the 5g mate 40 models has 1 extra Big NPU core and is overclocked similarly to how the sd855 relates to sd855

Gaming on android can be compared to:
A 80 yr old granny driving a awesome sportscar. The car can never reach its full potential. No matter how awesome the support crew / road conditions / or car enhancement.
You may want to blame granny for everything... but you get soft-hearted, give excuses and compromised because granny is old and feeble.. not good for the task.
