I wonder if someone will release a smartphone without a selfie camera any time soon (or ever).
There was some in the past but not that great or hard to find.

Marco M, 16 Dec 2019You want to be stuck in the past, with 90 minutes wired cha... more>Having my phone anchored down for that long
There's no need because it takes one hand and less than 3s (less than 1s if the cable was left in a convenient position) to connect a phone via a magnetic cable, there is no such thing as "that long" because the phone stays connected as long as you're anywhere near your desk, therefore it likely stays full or near full for the duration of the day, unlike "fixed" wireless charging in which the charging pad is not going to follow you in a radius around your desk like an attached cable could.
And again, if you think QC2.0 is slow, "fast" wireless charging merely promises 10W+ maximum wattage, that's over 30% slower than QC2.0, with a far higher cost of acquisition.

          >Recent phones have either in-display FP readers, or faceunlock
Asus Zenfone 6, recent *flagship* w/o in display FP, among others.
The speed and reliability of face unlock depends on the implementation, many will not unlock at oblique angles, which is what you commonly encounter if your phone is stuck to a charging pad set at a fixed angle.

          >My device gets unlocked by my Mi band 4
BT unlock, I also have the option but I consider that too insecure, but that's your choice.

          >Even without these types of comfort, pin or pattern would work just as well.
Entering my pin into my iPP almost every day, I know how slow and annoying that gets, it's mandatory for iOS if the device remains locked for a certain time, good thing one could steer clear on Android except in case of a restart.

          >But to be more direct, when the phone is on the pad and charging and I need to to something that requires me to lift and hold it, then I just lift and hold it and put it back on when finished, without attaching any cable.
If the magnetic cable's attached in the first place, you would've completed that set of actions with the phone continuing to charge for the whole duration.

          >leaving it alone because of a cable tying it down.
You don't need to, the strength of the magnetic attachment means that you could just give it a slight tug and the cable will detach (the strength of the attachment is a little more than 2N, since you could hang a phone by the attached cable and it won't detach unless you swing it around). It's magnetic, mind you, think MagSafe, and why it's safe (also convenient) to detach.

          >typing is now swiping, and has been for more than a decade.
That's funny because I'm the only person I know of around me who swipes. Everybody else still types, and some type faster than I could swipe, because swiping needs one finger to connect letters across the keyboard back and forth while it's often faster to have another finger at the other side waiting to simply tap if you have the muscle memory. I just don't, and swiping is good for one handed operation which is why I stuck to it, but I don't believe I'm in the majority.

          >Whether I swipe with my thumb or index finger makes no difference.
Further indication that you swipe very slowly, thumb swiping at max speed is hands down faster than index finger swiping, not least because the index finger isn't as rigid as the thicker thumb with one less joint introducing variation in the movement.

S Yu, 13 Dec 2019I don't think enough has changed to warrant a change in opi... moreYou want to be stuck in the past, with 90 minutes wired charging times etc. And you are allowed to do so, just don't complain when others move forwards and don't settle for that. I have QC 4 chargers for when I need a rapid charge. Having my phone anchored down for that long would really making it tempting to do something as stupid as charging over night.

Recent phones have either in-display FP readers, or faceunlock, hence lifting the phone would not be necessary to unlock. My device gets unlocked by my Mi band 4, so no need to lift it from the desk to unlock. Even without these types of comfort, pin or pattern would work just as well.

But to be more direct, when the phone is on the pad and charging and I need to to something that requires me to lift and hold it, then I just lift and hold it and put it back on when finished, without attaching any cable. Do I need to take a quick walk over to get something to drink, why not bring in instead of leaving it alone because of a cable tying it down. I don't miss those old days of charging slowly by cable. I really don't.

Again, not being stuck in the mid-2000s, typing is now swiping, and has been for more than a decade. Whether I swipe with my thumb or index finger makes no difference.

Marco M, 13 Dec 2019You had wireless charging in it's early state, and it's a s... moreI don't think enough has changed to warrant a change in opinion, and much of what you said doesn't suggest an improvement on the charging method itself.

                          >My phone (Xiaomi Mi Mix 3) came with a wireless charger in the box. I did not need to purchase it separately.
That's a rare case and most phones, even most flagships don't come with wireless chargers.

                          >You don't have to buy a complete wireless charger, you just need the pad/stand. You connect it to your already existing charger.
That's in fact the bulk of the investment, quick chargers can be very cheap and are largely the same as expensive chargers(excluding the best GaN multi-port chargers which are indeed exceptional, but those are a tiny niche), however cheap wireless cradles are generally ugly, a major factor considering their size and usage requirement, and may have questionable charging stability and placement issues.

                          >Many phones still does not come with their ideal charger in the box. So you need to get a PD or QuickCharge 3/4 etc if you want the fastest charging speed the phone has to offer.
I'm not asking for that, nor is it really necessary for most people, as I said QC2.0(around 90min full charge) is often enough when a connection is easy to achieve and maintain, like with magnetic cables, but probably not enough for wireless since it stops when you need to pick up the phone and use it.

                          >On my desk at work, if I place the phone on it's wireless charging pad next to my keyboard, then it is still fully functional and as easy to operate if it was just laying on the desk itself.
I hardly ever "operate" my phone with it flat on the desk, nor do I believe the freedom to poke at it means "fully functional", typing is slowed to a crawl for example. Also consider phones that don't have front facing fingerprint sensors could also use magnetic cables fuss-free, but will need picking up to unlock and putting back down to charge.

                          >Most phones have their charging port at the bottom, now that on the other hand is inconvenient. Particularly when using it by a desk and the cable typically comes from the wall/top.
I don't know how short your cable is but typical 1.2m cables have no issue at all reaching from the wall over to the edge of the desk, 2m cables are also cheap. I would say that whatever makes cable length an issue is a specialized usage case.

Most new cars also has wireless charging in the center console.
                          >Yeah, and the one I've seen in a recent model Cadillac Escalade doesn't charge the S10+, because it's too small for the device(in a thin silicone case though) to sit flat, and when the device doesn't sit flat it refuses to charge, go figure. Also say you enter your car with 5% battery, if you had a magnetic cable plugged into the USB you could connect it with one hand and go on using it as usual, but if you only have wireless, it's stuck to the charging pad wherever that is, and again in the case of the Cadillac you won't be able to use it as it's to the side and actually slightly behind the driver, very impractical if you need to both use and charge the phone. I understand the placement avoids distracting the driver and makes it easier for other passengers to use it but a cable is no doubt more flexible, and there are enough ports for a cable for each passenger, but only one wireless pad.

S Yu, 12 Dec 2019I tried wireless charging back with S6E 3 years ago, but ga... moreYou had wireless charging in it's early state, and it's a shame.

                            1) My phone (Xiaomi Mi Mix 3) came with a wireless charger in the box. I did not need to purchase it separately.

                            2) You don't have to buy a complete wireless charger, you just need the pad/stand. You connect it to your already existing charger.

                            3) Many phones still does not come with their ideal charger in the box. So you need to get a PD or QuickCharge 3/4 etc if you want the fastest charging speed the phone has to offer.

                            4) On my desk at work, if I place the phone on it's wireless charging pad next to my keyboard, then it is still fully functional and as easy to operate if it was just laying on the desk itself. Inconvenient? I disagree. Most phones have their charging port at the bottom, now that on the other hand is inconvenient. Particularly when using it by a desk and the cable typically comes from the wall/top. This is why I got an additional charging pad ($13.50) at work. This made my phone a lot easier to use whilst charging by my desk.

                            5) Most new cars also has wireless charging in the center console. Mine is too old (2016), but has the wireless charging built into the phone holder I purchased for it, so again another convenient victory as I don't have to first place phone in holder and secondly attach cable to charging port. The holder is always connected and accepts my phone with ease and charges immediately. I only use the holder when using the phone for navigation, which connects to the car's audio system by bluetooth cause gone are the days of needing minijack for that. The stock navigation system is quite horrible compared to google maps. The rest of the time it sits neatly in my jacket pocket streaming music.

Its stupid and great at the same time. The great part is that you dont need any cables but the bad part is that you need to have at least diagnostic port as docking connector so you can still flash custom rom unlock bootloader etc. Even wireless adb is stupid idea. U still need to have physical pins.

Marco M, 11 Dec 2019In all fairness, not every single phone ever made must be m... moreI tried wireless charging back with S6E 3 years ago, but gave up soon never understanding how it made sense to anybody. A phone is unusable or very inconvenient in the very least if confined to a cradle of sorts, the additional attention to put it directly onto a cradle is an inconvenience and adds up with time, every wireless charger is an additional investment(unlike cables which are much cheaper and are lying around everywhere) not to mention waste of desktop space and the fact that only the most recent phones support wireless fast charging which is a further investment replacing the chargers with new ones that support the new standard.
Only very very price insensitive and environmentally oblivious people could justify generating that much electronic trash just for little to no added convenience during charging. As an option, of course options are good, but as a forced sole charging method, the advantage is highly questionable. With wireless power banks, the lower efficiency is another serious issue, not to mention having to use the phone with its back stuck to the huge power brick that should otherwise go in a backpack.
I said this many times but again, I recommend magnetic cables. The plug and the cable find each other automatically and even a blind person with one hand could easily charge a device, also it supports data transfer and up to QC2.0(possibly higher with newer cables) which is much faster than standard wireless charging.

No ports? At least with no headphone jack the worst is that you have to use the speaker. With no USB port you're actually screwed when your phone dies.

Are they implementing it a bit to early? Yes, yes they are.

They should at least wait until the whole world is actually familiar with wireless charging, they don't realize that their biggest consumers (Asia) doesn't even know the existence of wireless charging. Same reason as to why phones with no headphone jack fails here in Asia is because the idea of wireless earphones is too expensive to achieve.
