All Samsung Galaxy S20 models will have 12GB of RAM

13 January 2020
We doubt we'll see a 16GB model. On the plus side, the base model will match the top model, unlike last year with S10e (6GB) and S10+ (12GB).

Manufacturers keep adding more and more RAM past the point of usefulness, and it is swallowing up fab capacity. Memory prices are already predicted to go up measurably this year.

Niko jss, 13 Jan 2020What can a 12 GB phone do that a 6BG phone can't? When they are giving just take it ... what's wrong in adding extra memory. Memory is cheap these days and RAM is not the reason for phone price increase these days. Don't think more RAM will increase phone price .. that is not the case don't worry

Yet know, if they just offered a large battery compact device, like S10e size, I'd be all over it.

Honestly speaking, I still fi... moreIts not android's nature cause I can run a few apps on my phone which only has 2GB RAM its just OEM design their skin to be more aggressive as it saves a little battery (starting an app uses more but the system usually doesn't allow background startup) and the killing is getting worse my friend has S7 or S6 which has more 3GB RAM and another friends Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 with 4GB RAM and both kill apps more aggressively with Huawei being worst it closes chrome if he switches to 2nd or 3rd app

Anonymous, 13 Jan 2020Android requires a lot of ram to compete with Apple. That is a very dated concept. Textures and objects don't change size across os and if you want to keep the apps in memory and not reload RAM is needed irrespective of the Os used.

Anonymous, 13 Jan 2020Android requires a lot of ram to compete with Apple.Yeah that is why iPhone kept reloading apps while Android had all apps in memory.
All tests are available on YouTube.

6GB seemed like overkill but Samsung added enough shovelware to use it up. Background tasks are killed after a few minutes even if they have a proper background task notification going. It kills music playback, uploads, downloads, transcoders, and even Samy's own file manager while it's copying files.

But there is something called as futureproofing and plus this is a flagship device.
Paying more than 1000 dollars for a flagship means it should have all top of the line specs.
Not skimming on features and hardware like iphone.

[deleted post]But you never tried these phones youself, while i did tried an iPhone 6s vs a Galaxy S6 Active, and i will tell you, i would go for the S6 Active over any iOS device.

Anonymous, 13 Jan 2020It's a good thing that all S20 models are coming with 12 GB... moreMost of the markets will receive S20 with Snapdragon 865 on board, instead of the obsolette Exynos 990.

While it's definitely a better chip, it all depends on how optimised the OS is. OneUI is known to be a very heavy one, many unnecessary background apps or processes keep running for no reason (such as Samsung DeX). Sometimes installing the best chipset in a poorly optimised OS is just pointless.

Honestly speaking, I still find app background running in Windows Phone and 10 Mobile much better than Android. How hard can it be to leave the app running on background alone?

There's a lot of third-party processes in the background that cannot be killed, run whatever they want and are consuming resources like crazy, making the GC even more aggressive depending on how many apps you have.

We all know that 12gb ram is overkill in terms of what the customer need.
But smartphone innovation reach a certain point where you need extra points to sell and to make headlines. Thats why we see 12gb ram, 144 refresh rate etc
No need to complain everything the smartphone maker does.

99% of phone users (and I might be short) don´t need 12GB of RAM.

Whats the use of 12GB RAM if the OS is going to kill most apps running in background and won't allow multitasking for more than 2-3 apps
Over the years I have seen multitasking getting worse with aggressive background killing
