DxOMark ranks the Sony Xperia 5 in the same class as the Galaxy Note8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Sony still has a lot of catching up to do in the camera department as per DxoMark.

Such a surprise, their own camera fails to deliver. Sony never seems to learn from their mistakes.

The OnePlus wiped the floor with the Sony, but the reviewer failed to mention what mode he was using.
This also may explain that GSMArena and even PhoneArena are far more forgiving with Sony cameras. GSMArena explicitly test the manual mode on Sony phones.

And I am not really a Sony fan, posting using a OnePlus.

Has anybody noticed the DXO Mark disclaimer about their testing protocol? There they mention clearly that they test only the Auto mode for most scenarios, apart from the instances when they choose bokeh, flash and zoom modes. Sony (uniquely and rather stupidly) engage full HDR only in Manual mode. This means that DXO Mark most likely miss out on computational photography capabilities of Sony phones for most scenarios. This may explain the clipping of highlights etc. On one hand Sony has to finally activate HDR as default on its cameras, like all other manufacturers do, but also DXO Mark have to answer whether their score on Sony phones is lowered by their weird testing protocol, which disregards the capabilities of Sony cameras in Manual mode. I have to say that engaging Manual mode on my Xperia XZ3 makes a very big difference.

Sony wrong move again. I can't imagine how can they cope up this 2020.

                      $700 is not mid-range
                      Snapdragon 855 is not mid-range

Sony makes the best camera sensors for phones, why is it that they cheap out? just to make a little bit more profit?
