DxOMark ranks the Sony Xperia 5 in the same class as the Galaxy Note8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Sony still has a lot of catching up to do in the camera department as per DxoMark.

Sorry, to me it simply looks more like Sony is being terrible at software image processing rather than they are intentionally taking a minimalistic approach.

    Not really because the hardware on Xperia 5 doesn't hold a significant advantage over others'. So in a best case scenario, it will be on par with other devices with GCam that has a Snapdragon SoC.

    Because for some reason it doesn't work properly? Go check on XDA threads, there are loads of people complaining about how GCam port crushes or runs very poorly on their Xperia 1/5.

A phone is an ultimate form of a PoS camera, which means every adjustment and correction should be made by a software automatically and instantaneously, so that users won't have to fiddle with settings or go over different menus to get the best result out of it. If the manual mode is the absolute necessity to take a decent looking photo with it then it can't be considered to be a good phone camera to begin with.

        Sony tucked away HDR into the manual mode and now they're getting seriously low score for exposure category? Well, they literally asked for it. You said it yourself - "it uniquely affects only Sony phones". That's the answer you were looking for.

No large, exclusive camera sensors & lenses. Even with GCAM, they'll barely become competitive with the rest of them. You can't beat hardware with software. If Sony was truly serious about their smartphone cameras, they'd start using high-end sensors like the ones they make for Huawei; along with tweaking their image processing algorithms & start using advanced computational photography techniques to actually reign the smartphone photography scene. The thing is, they don't really care.

                As expected. Just look at those samples before talk. Its the same quality as any other site provided. The details explanation are well explained.

                Sony Xperia image processing act as its using an actual Alpha camera. Thats the problem with minimal processing. Smaller sensor, smaller pixel size, different value of aperture cannot gain so much if stick with that way, especially in a smartphone.

                Computational photography is needed as smartphone camera hardware are limited. Apple, Huawei, Google realize about it therefore they work something out. And about that non-HDR on Auto, thats a fail. Means u cannot get a close to reality photos with that amount of highlights clipping & overblown. Kills the means of 'point and shoot' camera. Force people to use manual? Guess what? Others already better in Auto, means it still better in Manual as well than Xperia manual mod (still dont have RAW support).

                I call this a lazy image processing. Its like just putting some of color correction, a bit of sharpening & NR. Thats it. Hope new Xperia wake up.

Score of 77 isn't that far away from what the competitions have got in the same category though, so at least Sony is doing a decent job here.

                    This score is from Sony WITHOUT using any sort of computational algorithm to enhance (and modify) the images - every single detail is purely done through hardware.
                    If this phone uses the same algorithm as the Pixel phones, then definitely GAME OVER for everybody else!

                    And this brings me to a thought of why nobody has ever tested using GCAM on Xperia 1 and 5 until now, now that their camera2 api's are enabled by default already.
                    This has been done on Samsung, OnePlus, LG, Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, and almost every other Android phones but Sony.
                    There have been some GCAM ports for these two Xperias already, and I'm yet to see one person to even test it out.
                    Is it because they're afraid that these phones would produce incredible results that would obliterate every other smartphone cameras today? Probably.....

                        Whackcar, 23 Jan 202095% of smartphone users use auto modes when taking pictures... moreBut in this case a fair reviewer should criticize the complexity of a Sony Xperia camera menu, for forcing people to move to manual mode, but then they'd go on testing the real capabilities of the camera, whether in auto mode or manual mode. Ultimately Manual mode is just a click away. DXO Mark has to answer to this because it uniquely affects only Sony phones. They also have to test both Auto modes and Manual modes on all phones, if they want to be considered the golden standard in photography testing.

                          I'm pretty sure DxOMark only use Auto JPEG mode for their evaluation. Use the Xperia in manual mode with total control, and it becomes a completely different story altogether. Same case in point with LG V50 5G or G8.

                            only stupid people who relies on those DxOMark... never trust those paid scammers!

                                  Anonymous, 23 Jan 2020Yes, I noticed this too, particularly on a YouTube comparis... more95% of smartphone users use auto modes when taking pictures, which is why "point-and-shoot" capability is highly valued for smartphones. Phones like the Pixel & Huawei are so highly rated because they take excellent photos without any manual correction required (although in the case of Huawei, they also have one of the best manual-modes available for photography enthusiasts).

                                  Another problem with Sony smartphones is their image processing algorithm. Basically Sony goes for a noisier approach in order to retain more detail, but 95% of users prefer "cleaner" images (which is why Samsung is so highly rated even though their excessive noise reduction degrades the resolved detail of the captured image).

                                  Basically, you want to stick with Apple, Google or Huawei if you want detailed images with less noise.
