DxOMark ranks the Sony Xperia 5 in the same class as the Galaxy Note8 and iPhone 8 Plus

23 January 2020
Sony still has a lot of catching up to do in the camera department as per DxoMark.

Not a shocking score tho. But it's definitely improvement from previous XZ series. Nowadays, sony seems to designed xperia phones as "the perfect companion" for their other gadgets (such as cine alta and alpha camera). And yeah, even though now the alpha and alta division start to help the mobile division, seems like they're holding a lot of stuff back

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2020Has anybody noticed the DXO Mark disclaimer about their tes... moreDxO mark has to answer only one question.

Why they fake results of certain phones?

For ex, their Xperia 1 2x zoom test was not optical but only digital, from main cam and not the dedicated zoom cam, then falsly compared in quality to competitors optical zoom with dedicated zoom cam, and scored accordingly on same false premise...

Any naive disbeliever can go there, download those photos and check their exif data....

Why certain sites and reviewers dont ever question their "protocols", is another question to be answered.

Only fools dont care for those answers.

DxO is a providable proof scam.
        End of discussion.

Pixel 3 one and only lens is still one my favorites. Sometimes too dramatic (and therefore too dark), but its HDR processing is really great I think. Is that maybe the are where the Xperia 5 doesn't deliver - and therefore looks less exciting?

This shouldn't be a surprise, and it's nothing new. It is already well known that Sony has management issue. The Alpha team really doesn't want the mobile unit to cannibalize their digital cameras, so they are unwilling to share techs to the mobile units.

Sony is killing their own mobiles internally, and they don't even realize that.

              [deleted post]This.
In the end, it doesn't matter because Sony has pulled out of many markets. It's only a matter of time that they will close down or sell their mobile unit.

Kind of ironic as it's Sony who makes the camera modules.

lewein, 23 Jan 2020DXO is garbage and nobody should listen to them. They score... moreAbsolutely right. Xiaomi and Huawei are the richest and largest companies and they pay to Dxomark for super high unreal reviews of their phones. Actually Sony Xperia 1 and Sony Xperia 5 have better rear cameras than Huawei Mate 30 and Xiaomi Note 10 Pro, just listen the real photographers what say not the paid ones...

meanwhile, half the phones out there are using the same sony sensors (or design) and getting a better score.

pixel 3 = 103 (photos with main camera) = brilliant. Xperia 5 = 101 (photos with main camera) = worst ever. Huawei p30 pro = 89 (videos with main camera) = brilliant. Xperia 5 = 85 (videos with main camera) = worst ever. Compared to older xperia models: XZ3 = 73 (phots), 85 (video) ... people tend to overreact these days. Don't do that. Yes, the xperia 5 is way too expensive and no one should buy it, but the camera isn't the dealbreaker here.

Drawback is poor auto hdr, amount of details(at least compared to mate30pro), bad audio recording in loud volume.
It's got however the most natural looking colors, even 108mp chip won't help the color output and compared to a lots of detail in mate, iPhone or minote, colors affect the feeling of shot straight from the beginning.
Shame no phone is still perfect in defining colors as full size camera with like f1.4 aperture.

I use this phone right now, came from Galaxy Note 10+ (Snapdragon version) and Pixel 3. I didn't have Note8 or iPhone 8+ before but I can say with full confidence that Xperia 5 camera system is better than the one on Note10+ (for photos at least). Maybe it's a matter of taste, I don't know. In terms of pictures quality I'd compare Xperia 5 with Pixel 1. My main complain is camera speed, focusing system, camera app itself (menu, navigation). I with that Sony copied Huawei Mate 20 camera app.

Glad that Sony is finally going on the right track.
Yes, their recent scores are so low compared to the rest, but since Xperia 1 their scoring has been bouncing back and only increasing higher on DxO Mark.

With the current leadership, Xperia is slowly moving from the depressing point of "XZ" series to the Xperia series we used to know

Wouldn't it be better to have a Sony mobile take that market share rather than Huawei, Xiaomi etc?

Sony is still not willing to face reality, they need to wake up and get real with their smartphone cameras. And now both Samsung and OmniVision are providing larger 1/1.33-inch and 1/1.3-inch sensors than Sony themselves offer for smartphones, max is still 1/1.7-inch.

Not only will the cheapo compact camera die out for sure, but now they risk loosing out on being the no. 1 provider of smartphone camera sensors if they don't start competing on larger sizes.

Compact camera's with less than 1" sensor, apart from super zoom ones, are pretty pointless.

Getting closer to smartphones that are actually smartphones, and not a camera running android (Panasonic), with close to/or 1" sensors plus all the processing power available etc. and we have a very bright future for smartphone cameras, but right now Sony is lagging, instead of leading. Such a shame.

Looking forward to seeing the performance of IMX686 vs GW1, even though it came one year late to the party.
But even more so, I'm lookng forward to OmniVision's 1/1.3" OV48C 48MP sensor. Large enough pixels at native resolution (1.2 microns) for varied use and not just broad daylight, unlike all the other high count MP sensors with 0.8 micron pixels, but also quite massive 2.4 micron-equivalent performance when binned.

DXO is garbage and nobody should listen to them. They score based on who pays more.
