AnonD-51383, 20 Apr 2012How about a rating that averages a critics score with a gen... morei second this with the caveat that it be weighted slightly more towards the judges. Also another feature that must be included is an automatic cutting of scores as time progresses...so that older phones ,say at an arbitrary time of 6 mnths ,are kicked out of the top ranks.

Votes by solar month at farthest, at least two CAPTCHAs before voting with variable waiting period before vote checkbox can be triggered, vote only allowed to registered users, comment must be given for top end voting to be justified, ip vote filtering.
I think it would quite easily wipe 99% of fake votes.

I´d like to keep GSM Arena away from FB, so a own seperate account for GSM Arena would be best.
I suggest that only registered members either via FB or GSM Arena alone would be able to vote.

In case nobody else suggested it..i think captchas could work as well..make the voter verify the fact that he is doing it manually..its a tactic deployed by banks for internet banking logins..no matter how many times you vote..every time you do it, you will have to verify that you are doing it manually..i'm pretty sure a fanboy wont want to sit at his desk all day and keep on voting..
Its called "CAPTCHA"....maybe it will help.

Go for option 2. It is easy to implement and normally high end phones need to be rated :)

How about a rating that averages a critics score with a general publics score. It would eliminate person's rating a phone high just because they own it and would limit the range of scores to ranges around the critics score. You guys need to live with the phones and provide us with a rating based on real world usage not just living with the phone for a few hours/days. if you like this idea, contact me for more as i have a million, a few may be good.

Ryan, 20 Apr 2012How about a user voting via an app that registers emei?thought that as well, but i don't think all phones are quite powerful enough to browse this site with ease unless it's specifically made for mobile browsers, any mid - almost high, will manage it, but take the new nokia phones which are in black and white, they wont be able to vote and if that's your fav phone ever... you can't vote.
so no.
my method will work, just EMAIL me... cjdelphi@gmail.com (gsmarena)

I think the comment in which you have subjective rating is good. Have 2 sets of votes : one which gives public (or fanboy) ratings and the other which gives us GSM ratings. This way, the phone that has a wide gap between the two different ratings will definitely have a biased (fanboy) public rating. I have seen this kind of solution applied on sites like ign.com.
Also, in order to cheat the system, the fanboy will have to shorten the gap between the two ratings, which will bring it in line with your ratings.
In case people think that this would pit your word against the public opinion (thus rendering the whole voting system useless) you could say that the ratings are subjective, meaning that the public opinion cannot be very far off from ur opinion (as you guys have a dedicated team just for reviewing phones). The common man is thus free to make a choice : take your word or the public opnion (which has a possibility of being rigged).
Personally, i think you guys are doin a fab job with the reviews. I never buy a phone without reading the review on your site. Never really paid attention to the rankings / votes though. :)

3rd Option. Its better to get fresh results on every month wise, weekly , quaterly and yearly votes. Then do a consolidation at the end of the year based on the total votes and feedback give the Phone of the year title.

Isn't it much easier to remove the user rating system and create an honest system with the ratings from the staff at GSMArena? How would I know the phone's performance in comparison to others, if I did not experience any other mobile of the same generation. Don't forget that after a few months, a mobile phone will be outdated, so the ratings will be obsolete compared to the current generation.
Also add a section dedicated ONLY for Pros and Cons written by users as usually I find many Cons missing from the staff reviews and have to search through the countless comments to find some users who list what they hate about the phone.

I think you could combine the other options together - In addition to the existing voting system, include a table for LOGGED IN users and a table for STAFF RATINGS - so the user has a comparison or subjective rating to go by...
Else, I say Option 3 :)

AnonD-50023, 20 Apr 20122 one is better....... but instead of having fb to make us... moreyeah that will work, but how many people "wont" and that could have a knock on effect to how popular a phone is, people are inherently lazy and wont bother, kinda like me everytime i post on here like everyone else for that matter, 1000 posts would soon be 100 posts if we all had to register.

some ideas, 20 Apr 2012
Some ideas came to mind, hope there's someone to read the... moretoo hit and miss using averages, in the time 1000 fake votes are cast 400 real votes could have been made.
making it very difficult to work out based on statistics, my method is very simple and i see no reason why it should not work.
contact me GSM.

The rating system should be as simple as possible
But these ratings should have basis thru 1/10 scale
And calculate the average thru the votes and the number of voters
