Abhi-Darth-Plagueis, 31 Jan 2020I always wonder, why, companies who buy from Sony their cam... moreThe most assuring reason was Sony camera division, Alpha didn't want to share its software how-to knowledge to Mobile Division until last year, due to split collaboration between Mobile Division and other Sony divisions on 2011, when Sony and Ericsson break up. They only gave the sensor all the time, with IMX400 stacked-sensor as example without giving another more (software) knowledge to Xperia. It was improved a bit in XZ2, but it wasn't until Xperia 1/5 it bring its potential much better.
It was only when Kenichiro Yoshida took as CEO from 2018 rearranged the collaboration with other divisions to Mobile Division with the help one of Sony Alpha expert, Kimio Maki, to bring 40-70% of Alpha features, specifically software, to Mobile division.
Sony even combining all entertainment, technology and communication into one division as EPS, last year, in collaboration perspective, to bring all EPS division expertise to Xperia.
To be honest, it wasn't a right decision for Sony really cuts the collaboration between Alpha and Mobile...

If I would get this upcoming Xperia one thing I would do immediately after the purchase is to install GCam for more natural JPEG output and superiour RAW image quality.

Oh, and Ksu did specify he was talking about HMX in his post by saying "'That' Samsung main camera".

I always wonder, why, companies who buy from Sony their camera sensors, implement it so beautifully, and Sony, which uses its own special sensors in its phones, manage to f*** up the camera department almost every single time. To me that's bloody astonishing.

Looks promising but I don't believe that Sony will make anything good this time again. Currently I have an Xperia 5 in my pocket as a daily driver and can say with full confidence that single camera on Pixel 1 does better job that triple on Sony. Camera app is sluggish, photo quality is good enough (for~$500 phone, no more than that) at good light condition only. Focusing system is disappointing, no macro mode, shooting moving objects it very problematic (Galaxy S series sickness).

Isocell 108MP = just binning
Exmor 64MP = 2x2 on chip lens with 100% of frame covered by AF.
Sony makes motion eye sensor. Samsung copied.
Sony makes imx600, imx582 and imx586. Samsung copied quadbayer tech.
Most important markets : China and USA. Both get snapdragon + exmor Galaxy S /Note

At the moment it only works using very old GCAM version with no working Pixel HDR, which is useless.
