The European Parliament votes in favor of a common charger despite Apple's protests

31 January 2020
One way to reduce e-waste is to stop bundling new chargers with new phones, but promote a single standard that works with phones of all brands.

Once more EU strikes against unbridled greed and customer manipulation of mobile companies. Hats off to them. Lightening might have had its benefits in the usb 2.0 age, but in usb-C, PD, and thunderbolt open/4.0? No sir, not anymore.

I hope other regulators/legislative bodies do the same thing.

Anonymous, 31 Jan 2020How are they killing innovation in fast charging. All the 5... moreLightning Port was doing everything the USB-C does way before USB-C was even invented. and USB-C is basically a derivative of Lightning, as in Apple helped Intel develop USB-C as a means for the average Joes to get a taste of what proper tech feels like.

So Apple had two children: Lightning Port and then a few years later the USB-C. The world went with USB-C.

But forcing just a single connector on everyone does indeed stifle innovation. If Apple's R&D makes a port that is 2x better than Thunderbolt.3 but needs to use a different shape in order to achieve this, they will be forced to not be able to implement it in their devices.

I feel sorry for the manufacturers...
Many of them won't be able to sell $1 usb cable for $20...lol

Ah, forgot that Apple has trademarked "iNnovation" (TM), even if they didn't have a single innovation for years now. Removing the headphone jack certainly isn't an innovation, and removing Touch ID clearly isn't either - especially if it's replaced by that horrible notch.

The Lightning connector was innovate when they initially came up with it, and far superior to Usb 2.0. It could've easily replaced Usb as a standard - if Apple had opened it up for others to use. Apple however decided to sit on it, just so they can extort people with vastly overpriced cables and accessories. Compared to Usb 3.1, Lightning has no chance anymore. It needs to go. Removing that outdated Lightning would actually be a step forward, instead of removing useful stuff like headphone jack or Touch ID.

What innovation did Apple bring in fast charging by not adopting type C?

EU simply putting greedy manufacturers like Apple in their place.

I think it's a good move by the EU parliament. When such laws exists, it is quite easier for a new tech to adapt quickly. I have a USB C phone and I find it difficult to get a USB C cable from someone as many vendors even in 2020 provide the outdated Micro USB std. There is a slight change in the direction of wind though, with Redmis and Realmes ditching the older standard.

So now the EU wants to kill the innovation in fast charging.
Fast charging requires a good grade cable and a special charging brick.
USB-C is just a connector that allows it.
If the EU wants to reduce waste, they should just close the EU Parliament, because it's just a legislative garbage can.

Finally Apple Phones are moving from their death Lightning platform. It's true purpose was just for bringing money to the Apple pocket. No advanteges over USB Type-C. Macbooks are also using USB Type-C. Since 2019 there were speculations that 2020 iPhones will use USB Type-C. No need to complain Apple. Adapt or come with something better!

It's normal for apple to protest this way the will no longer make easy money from the bad cables they make. And look at them they are the only company not to go with a simple and common standart, meaning creating more waste and and fuss over a stupid cabel idea they have.
