An artist created Google Maps traffic jams by pulling a wagon full of smartphones

04 February 2020
The amusing experiment made slowdowns appear on the app, likely diverting traffic. Google responds to the stunt.

From the article: "Some would say the performance reveals the possibility of a more dangerous situation where Google Maps could be manipulated to divert traffic for purpose of malice."

"Some" say lots of stupid things.

Anyone could divert traffic "for purpose of malice" just by blocking the street with garbage, a car that pretends to be stalled, whatever. The reason this doesn't happen is because most people aren't jerks and criminals.

Smart, and it reveals the algorithm issues with Google maps.
This problem with Google Map's algorithm do exist in reality. In some countries, many people use motorcycles. Unless the user specifically indicated a motorcycle and use the navigation feature, I'm sure this affect the algorithm (a road being indicated less busy than actual, causing worse traffic irl since everybody is directed through it, or a car being directed to a tiny road simply because most motorcycles used it).

Maybe there were brands which are unknown for even us.
Such as Blaupunkt, Cirrus, Lark, Myphone, Cherrymobile etc.

This experiment has no point, this service does not pretend to be accurate, but is just an estimate to help people. Now if people want to screw this off course they can, but that's is just being stupid, we would all be better off without that kind of behavior.

There are plenty "old" Huawei devices with google apps and services, and seeing as he had purchased second hand phones for cheap, it is likely that there are some.

Hmmm... A hard problem I see. How about identifying each phone on how their sensors are triggered. For example, if they are stacked, it means the their accelerometers/gyros would show nearly identical behaviour on all axis. But this would mean higher battery drainage on a client phone as their sensors are always being engaged.

It's not exactly Google's fault. Its the GPS chip or the Galileo.. the accuracy Is around 10-30m for public.. google can't magically judge if the smartphones are stacked one upon another. It's practically impossible to do so virtually.
