Quality aside, its either you have, or you don't. The same as with hi res stills, in the right conditions you get crunchy picture.

Most people are probably not gonna record 8K video right now (due to space & heatup issue), but I'm glad it's an available feature now. This ensures that other brands will also catch up on it, and work on improving it's recording quality going forward, which will also ensure that in a few years when 8K becomes standard, the phones of that time would have improved enough to capture breath-taking footage. (the same thing happened with 4K. Take a look at 4k footage from phones of 2014-2015 & compare it to 4K footage of current phones. There's a huge difference in quality).

Anonymous, 05 Feb 2020Why does this look so much worse than iPhone 11 Pro (Max) '... moreLol IPhone tops out at 4K60.
Not good enough to do 8k@30fps or 4k@120fps.

It looks bad because:
1) It was re-encoded by Samsung engineers to add the Samsung / Quallcom logo
2) It was re-encoded again by Youtube. (at least the versions that are below 8k)
Original un-edited 8k videos will probably look stunning.

Oh No! The IMX586 is not supposed to do 8k video, according to all those who didn't know how to even read a spec sheet well.

Anonymous, 05 Feb 20208K content on 4K screen will look better than 4K content on... moreI think that high resolution would make sense only behind an ultrawide lens. "8K" televisions is overkill in normal sizes, and make sense only when big.
But it looks like a gimmick. Give me the best possible image quality for 4K and 2K videos first! An "8K" image that has been perspective-corrected, stabilised and correctly filtered down to 4K or 2K would be much more useful than a raw 8K image.

Shanti Dope, 05 Feb 2020Same goes with high refresh rate screens, yet people seem t... moreA higher refresh rate looks significantly better to a point, in that you can literally see the difference between 69-90-120fps, theres a few videos on YouTube showing exactly this, and then it also shows the battery loss, i think the one plus tests showed a loss of about 1hr when in 90fps vs 60, i think from a compromise stand point 90 is a decent middle ground, yea the battery does take a hit somewhat but not by a big difference, if optimised properly, i think as long as there is an option to choose fps in settings then it user discretion

It needs a significant market for 8K to take off. I predict that 8K will be riding on the 5G wave, and reach a higher level of acceptance than 4K of today well before the decade end. I will not be surprised if there are more than one country having regular 8K TV broadcast by 2025. And if that happens, 8K's acceptance will surpass that of 4K.

A good compromise for phones would be 1080p screen and 4k camera since videos could be uploaded or consumed/displayed on TVs which would take advantage of the extra resolutions.

I have a 8K TV, so I think this one is addressed to me for full resolution and probably many others.
I'm glad I was shooting in 4K since Galaxy S5 era, so most of my videos are looking great nowadays.
Cheers with downsampling placebo.

4k consumes a lot, look at difference in battery life between Xperia 1 vs Xperia 5.
