this will only be useful for phone makers that has no access to Google play store eg huawei, I for one will not use coz there is no way one can find a better alternative than Google map. these phones makers will take years to come up with a viable and useful alternative if they can. FYI it takes google 15 years to turn google map to what it is today. another things what kind security this new app store will provide and what is the implications of personal data being stored by chinese company ? there are so many technical issues to be solved example will the app store software work well with every iterations of Android update. will app developer updates app frequently ? so if one can use a full fledged app store than a half baked one who do you think in the end they will choose if given a choice ? I don't think these companies will daredo to imposed it's new app store in phones that are not restricted by us laws coz it will be suicidal

I think this is awesome, competition is always good and the consumer wins.
After the Huawei ban I think all of the other Chinese brands realized that its unwise to rely on US technology because they can just cut you off whenever they think you're a "security threat".
And they can do this without presenting any serious evidence just like the Trump administration did so why trust them to keep doing business with you?

This is no bad thing, Google having a monopoly on the whole smartphone ecosystem is a opportunity for viruses and spying governments etc to get their dirty hands on your stuff. Clean gloves hold dirty hands!

Right move. I would support these companies in my own way. With all the force us ban, china will start creating its own chips, os and stop depending on us. This is what we need. We can trust a single powerful company controlled by the U.S.

Finally competition, Thank you GDSA members.

I won't hold my breath with Samsung and LG and Sony joining, but I hope that the Asians manufacturers are finally fed up with USA administration antics and Google's near monopoly.

We the consumers really need an alternative. Google has become too fat, lazy and complacent.

I wonder if european countries, Africa and soutch america will bring their own spy-app-systems soon ;) Right now it's the choice of being spied on by America (Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon), China (everything) or Russia (Yandex, Telegram, VK, etc.). Im also looking forward to a swedish spy app developed by ikea: spyökli.

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2020Really, dude?! Does the US ban sensor search engines? Does ... moreBut the US has banned US companies from trading with Huawei and other companies placed on the entity. If that's not government control, then I don't know what it is. Mind you these are private companies but they are not allowed to trade with the companies on the entity list.
The bottom line is both China and US and in fact other countries have some level of control over companies operating in their border, so claim higher moral ground here.

So that means it is upto the consumer now, if they want to be spyed by the Americans or the Chinese.

Well that brave of opp, vivo and xiaomi considering they are not on the banned list only huawei is. I don't think this alliance would last that long when it effects their revenue. The alliance will crumble.

to those who are saying why this is called global when it composes only of oems from china- i have one word for you- context. please consider the whole name- global developers service alliance.

the article read: "The main purpose of the alliance is to provide app developers a one-stop platform where they can simultaneously upload their apps to all the app stores of the aforementioned group of manufacturers. Games, music, movies, books and magazines are other product categories which can take advantage of the GDSA’s functionality."

the reason this is called global is that it caters to all developers whether it be from china or the united states, or elsewhere. this is not in support of just huawei's "app gallery" but also of the other oems' planned apps/games repository of their own. xiaomi already gave statement that this is simply to make it easy for developers to upload their apps or games to multiple repositories.

according to an earlier statement of the group, this is not to compete with google play store and it may eventually even include the play store and amazon's apps & games store. the goal is to, again, facilitate uploading of games or apps into several app repositories all at once.

Whatever operating system they come up with won't be allowed in the USA same as Google and Facebook etc. are not allowed in China so I wouldn't be too worried about it
