The laser AF is used for low light scenarios mostly but relies on the sensor sensitivity then ToF came to replace it with a shorter time of the bounced information and higher sensitivity (14micron at least and larger aperture).
+ ToF can do depth info(foreground and background).
so the combination of the new sony 2x2 AF with ToF is the best for smartphones

Laser autofocus is better for still image. DPAF is better for video. It is also very good for still image. But can't match Laser AF.
However DPAF+ Laser AF is the best combination.

A9 is faster than DSLR. Theres no question about that.
All professional photographers/videographers vouch for Sony when it comes to AF/Eye-AF.
As for smartphone, I know for sure my Z5 does a lot lot worse than my Honor 8 Pro last time, which has laser AF (actually worse in almost every aspects). Sony upped the AF games on smartphone only starting by Xperia 1.

For professional cameras :
Canon = dual pixel
Panasonic = contrast detection
Sony = hybrid ( phase and contrast)
All other = phase detection
Sony has best AF, Panasonic has the worst.
For cellphones:
- most are Phase detection (with or without Laser or ToF to assist)
- few are dual pixel
- most xperia since 2016 are hybrid (m5 was first)
- few have new 2x2 on-chip lens tech (imx686, 689)
Success of AF also depends on software. Two brands wont have same AF performance even using same tech. Be sure s20+ wont do what Xperia 1 ii can do, that tracking skill is pure software.
- Dual Pixel is more effective in lower light, all other have issues with "HUNTING". Also it acts better for video than stills.
The issues of S20 Ultra so far have only been for main camera. The periscope also is PDAF and dont do same "hunting" in daylight. It can be software or hardware problem.

I said laser autofocus i... moreLaser AF is redundant system when there's already dual-pixel AF, it's not outstanding by any means when there's dual-pixel AF that can kill it without having problems associated with laser AF (You might need to paraphrase just to not make Laser AF the best of the best AF there is, lol). Most of the time, in smartphones atleast, Laser AF is dropped when there's a dual-pixel AF sensor. All the problems I mentioned with Laser AF still exist while dual-pixel is blind at night, a brief flash to establish an AF is still far better. My point is, Laser AF is an assist on systems with inferior AF systems.
Sony's Hybrid system is just PDAF+CDAF, most of its AF accuracy is done by their firmware and fast dedicated stacked sensor RAM.

It's AF's characteristic is to be expected based on its specs and NO, it's not about the amount of pixel that it has, it's about the limitations that a quad/nona Bayer color filter arrangement has ever since and as of writing, only Sony has provided a solution to an existing problem while Samsung is just brute-forcing the number of binned pixels out of their huge sensor because let's face it, that's the best they can do in terms of sensor tech as of this moment.

While its using PDAF, ToF on P30 also assist on faster Autofocus, just like Laser AF did, but even better.
If laser are better than ToF, then Huawei made a stupid decision as its P30 vanilla version using Laser AF, while the Pro using ToF. So its not the case here.

Yes Dual-Pixel AF indeed works for both photos and videos, but it's focusing time is much less noticeable in photos (becuase it seems snappy when we take a photo), but it's focusing speed isn't able to instantly focus during videos with a lot of activity (I speak from personal experience, not theories), and hence i desire for improvement in focusing speed during video recording.
I expect this Omni-Directional AF to hopefully improve on that front (based on their ad).
If you read GSMArena's article, they explain the advantage of ODAF over DP.

None uses Laser AF alone. The comment was against the hybrid AF.
My point was Laser AF + Dual Pixel AF will be superior to the hybrid AF system as Dual pixel is better at Video and Laser AF at still.

1. Range.
2. Irregular shaped objects which causes the laser to reflect away from the receiver.
3. Separate system, slow response time compared to in-sensor AF systems.
It's more as an assist than a competitor to dual-pixel, it's nowhere near the speed of dual-pixel AF.

wow.. im surprise to see most of the people in comment section have become an expert in camera sensor. . personally, having a dual pixel af on a phone is good enough.. it is really reliable in still & video. . and now we have omni-daf .. if it is really better than dual pixel.. then it is a welcome.. no need to debate, dual pixel af is good enough for everyday use & far better than normal pdaf or laser af.
