Samsung aims to develop a 600MP camera sensor

21 April 2020
The human eye can perceive the equivalent of a 500MP image.

If SoC processing power was limitless I'd find it quite promising.

    Nnnnnnoooooooooo

This is way over the top. Improve your camera software, megapixels are worthless without good software

It's an extremely common misunderstanding that small pixels must lead to worse image quality. Many people just think more pixels = less light per pixel = worse photo as if this was a physical law, it's not!
The reason why the noise of a sensor with more pixels can get worse in bad light conditions is caused by the technology of the sensor. Each pixel needs to be read out, but each pixel can't be read out perfectly due to the current technology, this causes read noise. When a pixel can't be read out perfectly, this doesn't matter when a lot of photons are captured (good light conditions or large pixel or high exposure time or good f number). But it matters a lot when only one single photon is captured (bad light conditions and small pixels and short exposure time and bad f number).
So more pixels = more noise is no physical law, it is caused by the technology we have today and in the future we will be able to measure every single photon.

Anonymous, 21 Apr 2020There is a huge difference between 6 and 11MP. No, no tec... more"No, no tech would make a 600MP be usable even on larger sensors."
No, that's definitely not true. A perfect sensor is a sensor that is able to measure every single photon that hits the sensor. When a perfect sensor is able to measure every single photon, the number of "pixels" per sensor area is irrelevant regarding noise. Nowadays camera sensors with many pixels perform worse in extreme low light conditions because small pixels make the relative contribution of read noise higher, so the sensor can't measure every single photon because there is too much read noise. In the future there will be camera sensors with zero read noise, then a high megapixel count won't lead to more noise. The only remaining source of noise will be the slightly different amount of photons that are emitted /reflected by objects every millisecond and this is completely independent of pixel size.

Meh, actually not impressed... I want at least double quadcell with a 16 in 4 in 1 pixel binning a.k.a. quad-quadcell or sexagintacell using a camera sensor shooting 192 MP photos reducing to better 48 MP photos and making the best, brightest and most clear 12 MP photos. And this as a minimum. I prefer the quad-nonacell or nona-quadcell (36 in 9 in 1 or 36 in 4 in 1 pixel binning respectively) using a 432 MP camera for creating even sharper 12 MP photos. But even that won't be enough. I wish to be created a triple nonacell with triple quadcell twist or quad-nona-quad-nona-quad-nonacell (46 656 in 11 664 in 1296 in 324 in 36 in 9 in 1 pixel binning) using the modest 559 872 MP sensor for really ultimate 12 MP pics which may will be acceptable for me... :-P

PS: Guys, who else thinks that this start getting ridiculous... xD

And even when you could see more light... It's not much.
And you are completely disregarding the fact that they gimped any light intake advantage they did have by dropping the dual aperture.
The s20 would perform much better with that dual aperture.

samsung was at their peak with the 1.5 variable aperture, it's a ride downhill from there.
also, to unveil 4x optical after your competitor has had 5x optical for a whole long year and is now at 10x, what a total shame.
no amount of sensor size or mpix increase is going to give you +1x optical.
