Anonymous, 21 Apr 2020Little issues here: 1) you cannot put more MP than CPU ... more"the resolution would already drop to 6MP at 130mm. This makes pointless to use digital zoom if the result is worse than VGA at very longer FLs."
Huawei's periscope camera has 11.1 megapixels at 130mm. So, not a huge difference. Yes, a super tele would likely still need a dedicated camera, but for lower zoom levels a high resolution camera might be better than a 2.0x prime lens camera.

"This resolution even Medium Format sensor (can be 3x larger than Full Frame) would be crap"
No, this depends on the technology. There would be no decrease in image quality, if the technology is perfect. The reason is that a sensor with perfect technology would only contain noise that is caused by the slightly different amount of photons that are reflected/emitted from objects every millisecond. Obviously this has nothing to do with the sensor.

There are also plenty of test (check Anandtech's comparison between SD and Exynos version of the S20 Ultra and you'll see the SD865 is way better.

You tried S20 ultra and you don't even know the ultra doesn't have 50x zoom option.
Also exynos runs much smoother than Qualcomm while loading general apps. Exynos has also faster animation speed.
Exynos only falls behind SD for graphics intensive load.

          1) you cannot put more MP than CPU can handle. SD865 can do up to 200MP. I doubt 875 and 885 will support 600MP.

          2) This resolution even Medium Format sensor (can be 3x larger than Full Frame) would be crap.

          3) phone would take several minutes to process all these megapixels, also impossible to apply multiframe stacking using by many brands.

          4) If any brand decides to make a single cam at 13mm and use digital zoom to cover 26mm, 52mm, 78mm, 104mm, 130mm, 156mm, 182mm, 208mm ,234mm, 260mm, 286mm, 312mm , 328mm, 364mm and 390mm ; the resolution would already drop to 6MP at 130mm. This makes pointless to use digital zoom if the result is worse than VGA at very longer FLs.

One day, a camera will have so much MP, that it can see small things like virus and bacterias.

You can by a photo identify SARS-COV-2.

Like Galaxy K Zoom or Asus Zoom (it has periscope with moving parts).

Zoom lenses mean you can change focal length. You cant call zoom when focal length is fixed.
Zoom would be one camera that can move inside to provide you for example 24 - 70mm.

Samsung lost its way! This is clearly seen in S20 series and also with this article. They became more Chinese Wannabe Company, than other Original Chinese Companies. This is a pure Marketing Gimmick, nothing more. Shame on samsung.

Mobilemaster, 21 Apr 2020This is already stupid! Period! What we need is more optic... moreThere's no phone with optical zoom. There are basically only phones with prime lenses (only a optical zoom setting (for example 2.0x)). This means that there is often a large difference in image quality between 1.9x and 2.0x.
This isn't the case when you use digital zoom.
Furthermore in good light conditions most 50mm equivalent smartphone cameras don't capture much more light from distant objects than the main camera because 50mm equivalent cameras don't have twice the focal length (iPhone has 4.25mm and 6.0mm) . In low-light conditions the advantage is even smaller because the effective aperture diameter is often not much larger (Pixel 4 has 2.58mm and 2.43mm, so it's even smaller in this case). That's why digital zoom and many pixels are the future. The Galaxy S20 is the beginning. It uses a 64 megapixel Bayer sensor, it's the first high resolution Bayer sensor since the Lumia 1020 and therefore it doesn't need a 2.0x or 2.5x camera.

I.M.O the Nokia 1020 with its 41MP PureView sensor (38MP effective), 1/1.5" sensor size, 1.12µm, ZEISS lens, Peaked that was plenty enough, brilliant picture quality, big sensor and top quality lens system.

                                This is already stupid! Period!
What we need is more optical zoom, try to make a smartphone with 20x optical zoom, and I think 99 % of people will be satisfied. Optical zoom is far better then digital zoom. Huawei now is at 10x optical zoom(if they are telling the truth). I hope Samsung will soon make a 10x optical zoom phone, with 30x hybrid zoom. That would be great for next year!

Anonymous, 21 Apr 2020who does need 600mp on daily use? nobody.. focus on better ... moreMany people don't understand that the megapixel count decreases when you zoom digitally. A 13mm equivalent 600megapixel camera with 294mm² sensor only has 9.6 megapixels at 103mm, less than the S20 Ultra periscope camera.
Many people think that many megapixels decrease the low-light image quality. Yes, that's true, but this is caused by the technology of the sensor (read noise). In the future there will be camera sensors that have as many pixels as you want and the low-light image quality won't be worse.
