You know, instead of these gargantuan pixel counts, I wish they would invest more in dedicated chips built into the camera modules so that the processor doesn't do ALL the work in regards to vibrant photos and high-resolution videos. Imagine saving a 64MP shot in a second instead of forever.

It's just that the issues that come with them should be ironed out before release.
But, we don't need more megapixels than 108; at most, 150. Plus, i bet 600MP sensor samsung is developing isn't gonna be in a smartphone, probably for other purposes.

Once upon a time a smartphone paired with a huge 1-inch sensor was released. It costed $999, taking photos was laggy, JPEGs were unimpressive and it would easily overheat. But god the RAW files looked so much better than anything except for much larger dedicated cameras.

Also thanks you for knowing that ultrasonic fingerprint scanner tech isn't to blame for the failure of the original "3D Sonic", so many peoples think that because that one failed we should get rid of any ultrasonic fingerprint scanner while it is probably by far the best possible tech when done properly (which apparently the 3D Sonic Max nailed) and Samsung failed at upgraded from the first to the second one in their S20 when the tech was available to put into the phone !
And thanks for having common sense and realizing that a small bezel that can host many sensors, including Biometric and who doesn't do anything bad to the display not reduce the available and already too limited space for notification/status bar, is way better than any fulldisplay thing with a hole and nearly no sensors appart from a single camera that many doesn't even use !
Chinese Brands also made amazing phones with really good performances and low prices (though it is the Chinese strategy for invading a market to start with low price then increase them, but it still prove this is possible) and made amazing things like the first underdisplay fingerprint scanner, pop up, on display speaker, they were the first to add on many phones more than just GPS as satnav and to upgrade to 1m precision generation and many more interesting things !
Now OnePlus isn't interesting at all, but the OP7 was really nice even if it had high price, and prior models were really good too and had even lower price compared to the competition which made them true flagship killers !

There are still a lot of IA and auto processing traces visibles, otherwise, no one would buy 15000€ camera and simply invest into a 1000€ smartphone.

I don't know why people complain about the high resolution sensor !
For daytime photography Pixel counts does matter. What smaller pixel sized high MP camera had issues is Low light photography. That's why there was a sweet spot between pixel size and MP count. 12MP.
But in the era of pixel binning the high MP count isn't a drawback now.
The 108MP daytime shots can take on any good DSLR camera having lower than 20MP camera.
The S20 ultra couldn't deliver, it doesn't mean it's a bad idea. The problem was with the AF system.

Also both the OP and Samsung had display issues for software.
So, the innovation credit doesn't go away, of course if you knew what Innovation is.

And they are also gonna deliver a 20 and 50 times faster memory and processing technology that match the 20 and 50 times larger megapixel count than the current 12MP output they make from binning, or are they just planning to make a 20 or 50 times bigger storage for those pictures that will be way bigger than the resolution of any devices ?
There are sensors with less than 108MP that do better pictures, if they can't match them already, adding more megapixels won't really change much except getting more expensive devices and more computing time per shots.

120Hz display that S20 and OP 8 Pro uses already has a green tint issue.
108MP camera in S20 has AF issues (strangely the Mi 10 Pro got away from this)
Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in S10 was one of the first, but inaccurate and reliable.
Punch-hole idea was a bad one. S9's upper bezel makes more sense.
And now look at other OEMs.
Oppo makes a fast 65W charging and 30W wireless charging and it works.
Huawei nails its periscope cam in the P30.
So it brings us to the conclusion that the Chinese has done better.

These sensors are smaller than APS-C or 1 inch sensors.
Cramming too many pixels into such a small area reduces the light per pixel by a factor of 4 each time you half the size of the pixel.

Samsung is having desperate times to be doing this.
150MP! For what? They're definitely targeting the uninformed consumers, thinking that they will fall into this trap.
Sigh, I know Samsung's prowess in nanotechnology but photography isn't the same with chips. Can't believe they're doing this.

We've came full circle people, megapixels matter once more. Also new marketing game is size of the sensor and I'm pretty sure the first ever 1" for mobile will be super featureless and will do nothing nor it will deliver better photos than what will be on the market at the moment. Long live marketing.

Big numbers look good on paper, but often disappoint in real life.
