AnonD-909757, 11 May 2020As I said in a previous comment/answer, Apple and Essential... moreHonestly I agree. Make the phone thick but give me a bumpless and a huge battery. Make the rear metal also, not glass. Also also, use S10 camera placement. Its the best design yet in my opinion.

Anonymous, 11 May 2020pls.... apple copy the notch from lg v series .That's not a notch, but I agree the idea is the closest possible inspiration, as I said, the Apple notch is basically a bezel with display on the side and they moved the status bar up there unlike Android notch which have nothing else to himself except a dent on the display...
Anyway I am not against brand copying another one, that's actually what I said I hope will happen in the first place on my first comment, as long as it is good things that are copied.

Hahaha, those whingers about high refresh is rubbish & we don't need it.
Now, that Apple is climbing the wagon ... high refresh is great. Those sheep will never learn.

PartTimePhoner, 11 May 2020First notch wasnt apple. First dquare camera bump wasnt app... moreAs I said in a previous comment/answer, Apple and Essential notch are totally different, I don't think Apple even heard about the Essential PH1 before they already designed their own notch, it is just two brand getting to the same idea at once, because of the fulldisplay ideal they were trying to get close to, and the first notches post Apple were clearly copied from the iPhone X, there were large unlike the PH1 who had the smallest possible.
Essential phone is one of those brand too small to be really copied from, often when great feature are put on small brands, they aren't copied...
For the rest, they are more aesthetic than functional feature, so I don't even care, if it was me, there would be no bump at all, the phone would be as thick as the phone + bump, allowing greater battery and easier space management costing less.

Djellal, 11 May 2020Mate 20 pro already did it back in 2018That's a unique case, not something regular like the punch hole (which shouldn't be regular), and they didn't had ultrasonic 3D UD FP scanner.
Personally, I (and a lot of other persons) want both a pop up and 3D facial recognition (only the old Oppo Find X did it, but it is old, it isn't a real pop up but a pop up/slider hybrid and it doesn't have any FPS), but with only few (a single) brand doing it on a single phone and on a notch, this isn't how I'm gonna have it or anyone gonna have their own characteristics because of the lack of diversity...

LilPhone, 11 May 2020All OEMs, Apple and Samsung included, copies each other.
... moreI never said the opposite, I just said that Apple is often copied and that a better security will be a good thing to be copied.
The Essential PH1 notch is TOTALLY different from the Apple Notch, Essential basically made a fullscreen by removing the top bezel and made a small cut on the display to allow the front camera, proximity and ambiant light sensors to be still available, it was well studied, the camera was a regular front camera, the two other sensor weren't downgraded and they made it as small as possible to have te smallest impact possible on the notification and status bar.
Apple did the opposite, they basically horizontally shrunken the top bezel as much as possible and put the most sensors as possible in a spot where the displayed informations are only status vs android where it is notification and status.
So Android notch = A dent to put the minimum sensors as possible, Apple notch = A shorter bezel with displays around it, betting the status bar off of the full display part to get more content in it.
Then Android copied the large notch from Apple, the Essential PH1 was totally ignored at this point, they didn't even realized that it would seriously impede the notification and status bar that was already limited, the result was so bad that they simply reduced it, rather than fixing it or going another way, while Apple had the most sensor density, Android didn't, and Android reached a point where the only solution was to shrink it until there is only a spot for a camera (which look like the Essential PH1 but is actually different), hence, the teardrop notch is born, with shrinked and poorly efficient (and surely costlier) ambiant light and proximity sensors, but it was still hated and they simply stop removing the part around the camera, and the punch hole is born, where sensors aren't even allowed to exist outside under the display, which is a terrible and stupid idea.
So despite Essential having done something remotely similar, this is actually totally different.
And please tell me which other phone than the S10, Note10 and S20 have an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, I've never heard of them, I doubt they exist, but if they do I am curious to know which one they are.
The gesture is also copied from apple.
There are technology that is normal to copy, the first who put Wi-Fi of course and thanksfully other did copy it, same for many features including Universal Serial Bus (USB) !

AnonD-909757, 11 May 2020Yeah because no one ever copied Apple, no one copied Touch ... moreFirst notch wasnt apple. First dquare camera bump wasnt apple either. Most of the time it isnt "copying" to appeal to customers, its just more convenient so they use it as a base design and find a way to make it better then use it. If anything its "inspired by" a brand not "copied from"
Huawei used the square bump, other brands saw that it made designing better (extra space for battery and all)
Essential phone used the notch, other brands saw that it added extra display area and (except for apple) narrowed it down for even more display area. They were able to hide some sensor under display as well.
It isnt about appealing to other brands customers or whatever.
Its just convenient

Notch in iPhone is found in Essential phone first. Then Xiaomi, Oppo, etc. (Ex. Mi A2, Mi 8, Oppo A3s, etc.) also steals this idea.
Samsung S10 series ultrasonic fingerprint sensor has been in 2018 Chinese flagships.
The navigation bar (whatever is that called) is copied from iPhone into many OEMs, Samsung included.
And phone design copies each other.
Not surprising, really.

Provided that there is not much of a price hike, then the iPhone 12 will be highly interesting. Apple should also make sure they are using 5nm chips and resolve the poor cooling solution (by putting a vapor chamber). Thermal throttling has been one of the iPhone's weaknesses despite fast chipset. Selfie camera needs some improvement at low-light. iOS needs a bit more polish and more flexibility.
If all the provided rumours are true, plus if Apple does at least two out of three of what I've said above, then it would surely blow Samsung's S20 and Note 20 out of the water. Samsung S20 has already been facing multiple issues, from camera autofocus failure, severe thermal throttling, camera glass breakage (S20 Ultra), green tint or flicker display, etc. Pathetic phone.
