Anonymous, 27 May 2020By the way, here's the source https://m.gsmarena.com/sony_x... moreYes, the total sensor area would be less than 1/4 but that's still better than if the sensor was actually less than 1/4. Digital crop is better than physical sensor crop. Most phones do a digital crop from the main sensir in low light conpared to just using the telephoto because results are better. I agree with you on the distortion correction or maybe they just wanted to call it 12mp to keep the uniformity. Most companies aren't exact and they have mixed definitions anyways.

        There is no crop.
App did not recognize sensor correctly.

When you apply digital zoom, then start the video recording, it will be using digital.
The quality will drop and no longer be able to keep same resolution. No matter the resolution sensor is.

You can testmon your phones, apply 1,5x digital, then start recording. It will remain cropped with much lower quality.

Also this sensor 20MP isocell is tetracell, using in "bayer" mode would be much worse than bayer 20MP. Sony made clear they do not plan to use quadbayer sensors.

I do not even need to mention that would be fake marketing also pretty stupid to promote 12MP if it was 20.

Anonymous, 27 May 2020It's all good but severely overpriced. Sony needs calm down... moreOverall, the 8 pro is better, but still, the absence of the headphone jack or the presence of those wild curves are a deal breaker.

But as I said this isn't an official source and as I explained this doesn't explain the 12 megapixel resolution. Mathematically it's still contradictory. My only explanation would be that the lens has distortion.

[deleted post]Ok, I have found the source (though it's not an official source). Then the crop factor would be 43.266mm/[0.0008mm x sqrt(5184²+3880²)] = 8.35 and the equivalent focal length (related to the total sensor area) would be 8.35x6.95mm = 58mm. Though then the resolution at 70mm would be (58/70)² x 20 = 13.7 megapixels , so the 12 megapixels wouldn't make sense, if the resolution is really 20 megapixels. It would make sense if it had (70/58)² x 12.2 = 17.8 megapixels
And effective sensor size at 70mm would be smaller than 1/4" type as I said before.

[deleted post]Sorry to inform but the 2021 lineup will be here.

As long other brands keep paying for 4 or 5 cameras, Sony will have money for Xperia. Even more when PS5 comes out in december.

People buy Xperia because they want to, not because they cant afford iphone like costumers of other brands that make iphone copies.

[deleted post]That's what they said last year

                      Bring it on, Sony.

It may not become a low light camera champ (curious about their Night Mod though), but as an overall package, Sony did nail it this time! As an ex Sony user, I'm happy to say this 1ii makes me excited again for Sony. Might be returning to it.

Anonymous, 27 May 2020Sony does not have parent company (like Oppo) to get things... moreSony is the parent company with plenty of money for R&D. Unfortunately, Sony has a huge product portfolio ranging from hifi systems, gaming consoles, tvs, cameras to movies. It's obviously not prioritising R&D in mobile phones. I'd guess it makes more money in other areas.

OP8 Pro and Find X2 Pro are almost same phone.

No, 20 megapixels wouldn't make sense. If the 12 megapixels are related to the crop, then the resolution of the entire 1/3.4" sensor would be 12x (70/60)² = 16.3 megapixels (with a pixel size of approximately 0.9 micrometer).
Furthermore even if the resolution would be 16 megapixels, this doesn't change the issue that the effective sensor area at 70mm would be smaller than the area of a 1/4" type sensor.

Since XZ2 they offered 5fps full resolution and image processing on burst shots. Their predictive capture is again full resolution completely processed images unlike Google Pixel or iPhone which give you more images but at half resolution. Starting with Xperia 1 they offer AF/AE at 10fps on main sensor fully processed. With II you get that on all sensors or you get double that on the main sensor if you half press the shutter and then burst. Again all processed images.

Ultra Wide uses imx363. Same camera of Pixel 4.
Imx555 (Samsung) and imx557 (Sony) are more advanced than other. Being smaller does not make them worse. Isocell HM1 has 2x the size of 555, but does not perform better woth same software applied.

If Sony and Samsung sell 300MP 1/1.3" sensors, the chinese brands will buy. That is why both make them.

Funny to see the 1/1.5" ultra wide of Mate 30 Pro performs worse than 1/3.4" of Xperia 1 and Iphone 11 Pro, despite being 3x the size.
