ARM's Cortex-A78 and Cortex-X1 will power the Androids of 2021

26 May 2020
Cortex-A78 brings a 20% performance boost or 50% higher efficiency, while the X1 is a super powerful core to rival the Apple A-series CPUs.

I just hope it won't be as bad as 9825 and 990 -_-

Asphalt 9 runs at at least 120fps. I run it smoothly at 90fps because my screen is 90hz. Although I have a game that I run at 200fps on my 90hz panel and that is very smooth.

Is nothing compared to a gaming phone in regards to size of the tablet. It's uncomfortable. Very. My gaming phone is way better ergonomically. Those air triggers.... :-)

Besides. With tablets there is still the screen latency... And the internet lag.. With gaming phones... There screens and touch sampling as well as many other features are better for gaming than a cumbersome tablet... Besides... We now have 144hz and even 240hz....so the iPad is looking a bit on the older side.... I have an iPad. Never use it. Junk. iOS is the worst OS for serious gaming....

DrakeX, 26 May 2020Qualcomm started using stock CA77 cores on S865 but they re... moreARM only allows rebranding of their cores if they are semi custom. So Kryo 585 in Snapdragon 865 still is semi custom. Although as you stated performance difference is negligible. X1 is for smartphones without doubt. They are much more efficient and smaller than Apple A13's Lightning cores. If Apple A13's monstrous 5W per core power consumption is not much for smartphones, X1's 3.5W wouldn't be a problem.

X1 promises equal performance of A13's Lightning at single core, but much more efficient. I assume your prediction of Snapdragon 875 being based on Cortex-A78. Which most probably won't be the case.

Sure A14 will be still faster, but not much and still will be much more power hungry and more susceptible to throttling.

Anonymous, 26 May 2020Everyone so we can finally replace laptops with smartphonesSo, we can get a 14 inch smartphone that can run VScode/ visual studio and pycharm while processing 100-200 GB of data? and use GPU to accelerate the entire procedure? and we would be running crysis on it? Nice!

                      ARM always makes great CPU,
But it seems they are never gonna catch Adreno GPU.

Anonymous, 26 May 2020If I understand correctly X1 is considered as a custom core... moreQualcomm started using stock CA77 cores on S865 but they rebranded it to Kryo 585 so they're more likely to use the successor for S875. The "semi-custom" cores have negligible performance difference with the stock cores. I don't think CX1 is geared for smartphones, the power consumption would be too much and the footprint is bigger. CA78 already has some improvements over CA77.

We've yet to see benchmarks of the next gen ARM cores. Apple CPUs always had the edge and the right comparison would be against A14 not A13. If we assume performance based on Geekbench 5, Snapdragon 865 = Apple A11. Snapdragon 875 could be on par or better than Apple A12. Also note that Apple CPUs are clocked slightly lower than ARM CPUs even on tablets but they have been increasing clockspeed generation by generation. A14 is rumoured to reach 3.1 GHz which is overkill for smartphones. Unfortunately, Apple is too stubborn to fix sustained performance as they throttle heavily from high power consumption and heat dissipation isn't good enough which makes even Oneplus phones on par with them.

The good thing about Kirin chipsets is not only are they announced a bit earlier than the rest but also launch the product at the same time just like Apple so they own the crown as the best Android SoC for awhile. This is possible because of in-house production unlike Qualcomm and Mediatek who need to offer and wait for customers' orders. Not only that but TSMC orders are prioritised based on demand with Apple being no. 1 so Mediatek phones are usually released quite late compared to Qualcomm.

hmm, 26 May 2020I dont understand this where it has 20% more power but runn... moreA78 is significantly more efficient, but not significantly more powerful than A77. %20 more performance came from microarchitectural improvements of A78 and 5nm manufacturing process of TSMC both combined.

It's performance is 20% better at "same power". That means Cortex-A77 2.6GHz @7nm consumes same power with Cortex-A78 3GHz @5nm.

On the other hand A78 is 50% more energy efficient at the "same performance" means performance of A78 @2.1GHz is equal to A77@2.3GHz. But consumes half the "energy" (not power) throughout completion of a task.

Bobi7x7 , 26 May 2020The question who need that kind of Power in a Smartphone ???Everyone so we can finally replace laptops with smartphones

As much as I like seeing innovation made by ARM who put in more effort than AMD and Intel, the difference in real-life performance isn't far between generations. CA73 performs admirable to this day. I would really like if there were optimised productivity software that can bring the CPU to its knees just like software used in X86 such as compiling programs, 3D rendering, video encoding, data mining, etc. At least ARM Server CPUs are fully utilised. The reason X86 is more preferable is because of the software. Apple might shake things up with ARM-powered Macbook while Microsoft....eh.

I dont understand this where it has 20% more power but running on 3.0GHz over 2.6GHZ and then 50% less energy use while running 2.1GHz over older 2.3GHz

Why isnt that lower energy by 50% with the 3.0GHz over 2.6GHz

It makes sense if it use less power when it run lower clock speed and again it makes sense if it has more power when the clock speed is higher.

Let's hope manufacturers focus more on the efficiency rather than power.

This is excellent news... Although personally I think progress with the A55 cores certainly need to be revised and even updated...

Very impressive X1 cores A78 cores... 15% smaller surface area... Apple have to make pretty huge cores in comparison.

                                        Also the GPU is impressive.

Really glad Mediatek is back. And that 1000+ is right up there...

                                        Great news confirming 5nm nodes.

Got a feeling... That both Mediatek with there 2000/+ and the Qualcomm 875 X1... Could zip past the A14...

As it stands. Many people thought the A13 is the best SoC. Well. If anything. It looked good on paper. But severely handicapped. And not so well executed performance. The way Apple marketed the A13... I thought we could go to the moon. But after seeing PUBG on an 855+ gaming phone vs the A13 iPhone 11 Pro Max... I was not impressed at all. With lag. And often my friend would have to reduce his graphics settings... Even at 60fps... Max.

Whilst I am running 90FPS on a 90hz panel. With the highest graphics settings for hours... Zero lag.

Yes... So I have a feeling that for isheep. Apple will over-exagerate as usual there A14 when that comes out... . And make out that it could take us to Mars...

But what I think is truly impressive is the Android SoC's... We have the best... Qualcomm 875 X1... That is a huge leap forward... And that X1 sounds like it's for gaming phones... Yes please!!!

And the biggest and most impressive leap of faith has come from Mediatek!!!

I mean. Who saw that coming? I would absolutely buy Qualcomm 875 X1 or A78 or Mediatek 2000/2000+ in a heart beat. For 2021

And although I have an 855+. I am already considering an 865. And even mediatek 1000+...

But it has to be another gaming phone... Can't go back to luxury flagships... Or cameraphones... Sorry...

It has to be a gaming phone for me. Because that is what I am. A gamer.
