Weekly poll results: most people are looking to spend $200-$600 on their next phone

31 May 2020
Naturally, the lower end of this price range is more popular, but 2020 saw some excellent releases in the $400-$600 range.

Like if the CPU is the only factor in a speedy phone... (before you ask, storage speed is a very important factor, and A50 uses the pretty fast UFS 2.1 storage). Ok it is a bit slower than the competition, but who cares if an app takes a second more to load?

It literally doesn't matter how it performs or how durable it is, or that it's filled with spy software and hardware. If it has high numbers, they love it.

LilPhone, 01 Jun 2020But remember its software support is one year less too.5 year old Android is superior than current iOS.
IOS is simply behind the curve.

Androids, especially Samsung can get away with no major OS updates since they are fully featured way ahead of major android updates. And newer updates tend to remove features because google lol.

What good is software update for if the hardware itself sucks?

AnonD-558092, 31 May 2020While in surface you are right, unfortunately you are tryin... moreIn Europe people are going to spend a lot less money in vanity things, including expensive phones when a lot cheaper ones do the job perfectly.

The survey is a lot representative from an European point of view too. Is more or less the media here and also the most sold ones will be between 200 and 400 euros without no doubt. That also doesn't include the iPhone SE 2020 that is overpriced here. By the way, even less the more expensive ones from Apple or other brands. Here, carriers also don't subsidize phones. Only let you buy them in installments that tie you to them while paying the phone.

A lot of companies have closed, other with big firing plans and that will affect all the population as those without a job now will have to be supported while the recession and new jobs are available in the future. USA is also affected. For accomplish that local taxes will be increased for years to raise funds and increase government reserves. So even people with jobs and no problems will spend a lot less and be aware of the changing situation that some day can hit them if they don't have enough savings.

Obviosly there will be a minority not affected. But that is also what this survey is showing. A minotiry that will buy the expensive flagships, overpriced mid-rangers will be doa and an insta-flop.

IpsDisplay, 31 May 2020Yes but what's the best most scientific approach to represe... moreWhile in surface you are right, unfortunately you are trying to merge radically different groups of consumers to give them a single, unique perspective. It would be much more accurate to divide the sample to have a more detailed representation of the situation. Like currently with the global pandemic, if you were to ask "You are infected. Did you survive?", you'd have a lot of "Yes". That's not really helpful in trying to better focus your efforts. Now, let's divide the sample. "You are infected. You are young. Did you survive?" + "You are old. Did you survive?". Now the young sample would have an overwhelming majority of Yes, while the old sample would have much more No. Then you'd know where to focus your efforts in the most effective way and you'd also know where you could potentially relax your efforts.

As you said, there's more and more variables to take into account but usually, focusing on an area rather than the whole planet yields more useful results even if they are a bit flawed (but the whole planet is also flawed)

If we remove this populous nation that favours inexpensive devices

Let's say we then get more American representation then we run into the problem of options, options in America is poverty level, this skews data not to mention contracts

Let's say we get Europe then we run into heavy taxes driving up costs for smartphones this also skews the data

I watch the survey perfect and match others previous ones. In fact surprised that the preference not shifted to the lowest range of prices more. So it's very much what the sales will be this a probably even next year or further depending the global recession.

It's unfortunate because they tried to apply a single answer to the whole world when a certain, very populous area is known to crave inexpensive devices, which will skew the data.

We need to look at the region of the participants. I think that was always the case for those regions. In North America, this would not be the case.

No phone more expensive than say the Poco F2 Pro and other similarly priced devices is worth it. Consumers have some common sense as the poll results suggest.
